Actually I'd prefer a shot of the jumper block.

Must be a very primitive xDSL system, throttling is normally achieved in software in the carrier network, either in the DSLAM itself or in a router before the backhaul links. It becomes too expensive to have a protracted provisioning process for speed changes if it requires physical changes.

A large part of my previous contract was as the solution architect of a DSL provisioning process improvement project for a major AU teleco. :)

Haha I dont believe that for a second!!

The provider would limit the connection speed and bandwidth from their end.

And what sort of modem manufacturer would do that?!!

Let's see if there is a jumper in my car that will make it 200 bHP

Are you confusing kilobits with kilobytes possibly? e.g. a 576Kbps connection will be downloading stuff at a rate of 60-70Kb a second.

View Post

Richard H is right. The 576kbps stands for kilo bits per second, a bit being a single binary digit. This equates to just over 60kBps, or kilo bytes per second, a byte being eight binary digits. Note the case, in S.I. a small "b" is a bit and a capital "B" is a byte. If your downloading at 60kBps you'll be achieving your full downloading capacity, or bandwidth.

Don't be fooled by advertising and mistakes in case, although it would be interesting to argue the toss over bits and bytes if an advert was worng, just imagine an ad for "576KBPS for ?20 per month", thats almost 5mbps. The ISP would regret that, buy one get seven free.

I'm still waiting for a Computer talk-English dictionary to come out. All I know is that when downloading off the internet it takes several minutes to download a Megabyte( or whatever they are called)
