And is Quick match vital for a good aerial shell.

Not if it is bottom fused. If it is fused with with a leader, as usual, then yes, you will need some kind of piped match, but it needn't necessarily be lightning fast.

If the mortar is fused out the side, then the fuse can be any reliable fuse - black match, visco or _good_ cracker fuse.

However, if it is top fused, where the fuse (coming out of the top of the shell) is lit by the leader, then the fire is passed to the lift charge by a length of piped match, the piped match does need to be fast, or the shell will launch after some of the time fuse or spolette has already burned.

But how am i going to ignite the lift charge in the pouch ????

Anyway.
I ramed some (damp) Middle quality BP into a drinking straw and put it in the owen for faster drying. I tested it and it burns with about 1,5 sec an Inch.
Would this be good to use in a shell as a time fuse.

The procedure for leadering shells is well described on Passfire and in several books. For side fusing (also described on Passfire), you would just have a small fuse hole at the bottom of your mortar, through which you would put a piece of Visco or black match. The lift charge would either be loose in the bottom of the mortar (if only firing one shell), or in a light tissue bag on the bottom of each shell for quick reloading. The fuse would easily burn through the tissue paper. This is only suitable for small shells, for various reasons such as mass of BP and being unable to bury the mortars.

A strong paper tube would be a more suitable spolette case, as plastic is liable to melt and burn through, leading to premature ignition of the shell contents.

Make sure you have a very steady rack system. Think sandbags :)

Just wondering I have been able to find thermalite at gun stores heaps easy. But when I try to use it as a time fuse wrapped it quickmatches! Not as fast as real QM but damn fast none the less. I need 6cm to get 2sec delay! Does anyone know how to protect it from side spit without making it quick match? I am using tissue paper now as it works the best of the stuff that doesn't work :P If you put 3 lengths together in a triangle sort of thing I seem to remember it not quick matching... But can anyone help?

I dont believe thermalite is used as a time fuse. More so for the almost sure ignition of the time fuse itself, if the timefuse was punched through correctly.

That should be true but I am writing on almost no sleep so fourgive me if I am a little confused :D.

I know it is used for crossmatching but I don't have any other fuse but thermalite. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with useing it as time fuse.
