Example - 325 mesh
Wire Diameter - .0011"
Opening Size - .0017"
Open Area - 30%
Wire Diameter - .0014"
Opening Size - .002"
Open Area - 42%
That is from http://www.mcmaster.com/ under their 325 mesh.
It seems all the mesh sizes on their site has different wire/opening options.
So, there seems to be no standard. I guess wire diameter would depend on what use you want it for and the metal used.

They look very similar to this one:
I still have some 200 mesh sieves available. If you are interested send me a PM or email. Since I got them very cheap I will only ask for there actual cost to me. (about ten pounds each)+posting from Holland (where I live)
Now regarding your question, i found this interesting link:
Mesh vs Micrometers vs Things we can relate to ;-)
Click in the menu on ''appendix'' and then ''conversions'' and you will find a lot of useful information.

I've seen different wire diameters for the same Mesh.
Example - 325 mesh
Wire Diameter - .0011"
Opening Size - .0017"
Open Area - 30%
Wire Diameter - .0014"
Opening Size - .002"
Open Area - 42%

Patrick - there is a standard. The standard is in RANGE - meaning you are allowed a certain offset from the exact size. This means that 325 can be both .0017 and .002
