Maybe the leaves shape should be more squarish than rectangular.

I actually cut the leaves after taking the picture, so they were actually pretty square -formed.(About 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm)

Maybe the leaves shape should be more squarish than rectangular. And the shells timefuse was too short I think! It exploded half the way up.

The reason was that i didn't have any time fuse when i made the shell so i had to rely on experimental bp-fuse. Didn't work too well :)

You can use the green visco from firecrackers. Roll a length of 2cm wide tape around a piece of it and you have a great improves timefuse :D

What i've been actually doing is extract visco from roman candles. We get them for about 0,01 ? a piece, and they contain 30 cm of visco. It's much more cheaper than buying it the 'official' way.

I had a few missfires from visco time fuse. And also i think it's a bit of a waste for using them as time fuse for shells. I use visco in my BIG firecrackers.

I find it tha spollettes are excelent for aerial shells. 30 spolletes in under 25 minutes of not so hard labour. :P I Think it's pretty good. 30 spollettes will hold for a couple of months

The shell is nice, but it have to be larger.

The burning time of the leaves is okay but the composition pasted on ist is to weak in colour or effect. Or the backround light is to bright.

Creeping, Shimizu described the method, but it was the pasting with wheat paste ;)

I think it will work with two layers, but you have to use thin paper like japanese type because the comp. must be able to burn it quite fast.

I get the same Windows Media Player error message about codecs. I can't play this video either.

I have experienced this fault a few times myself.
The way in which i worked around this problem was to download the DivX codec and DivX player.

Whenever i came across a file that was reluctant to play in winamp or windows media player (or just played the video portion or the sound portion), i would open the file up with DivX player, which would usually resolve the problem.

Hope this has been of help.

All the best

I'm only speculating here, since I don't know a lot about falling leaves stars, and haven't used them, but charcoal streamer comps wouldn't work so well as leaf stars, since they ignite very easily, so the whole surface of the leaf would be burnt up very quickly. I'd guess you'd want a less ignitable comp, like a perchlorate colour comp, so that only the primed ends ignited and it burned slowly.

Some commercially made falling leaves shells use a modified form of Visco for the "stars". Basically you take a Visco spinning machine and instead of loading it with a blackpowder mixture to make a delay fuse, you use a coloured fire composition. When it's dried, you cut it into 3....5cm lengths and prime one end with BP paste to ensure good igntion. From the brightness of some I've used I would guess they use a high temperature magnalium based recipe. Perhaps they fall a bit faster than paper leaves, but the effect is still quite nice, and a cost effective way of getting a colour (rather than silver/gold fire dust sparks) shell with a long hang time. :P
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

I've just tried some tests of falling leaves. The best results I had were with iron filling fountain composition, which had been ball milled for 1/2 an hour without the iron.

24 KNO3
4 S
4 C
10 Iron Fillings

I took a square of paper 4 inch square, then used pritt stick to cover the entire surface of one side of the paper. Then from the center on the paper covered 3 inches towards one of the edges. I then folded the paper in half, leaving a 1 inch band of of paper stuck together and 3 inches of comp. I then primed both of the open edges with bp.

I hope this makes sense. The results were promising anyway, I couldn't test this in a shell because i'm not in a location suitable for firing shells at the moment. But when the leaves were dropped from my shed roof towards the ground they left a small trail of sparks and glowed quite brightly.
