...ummm, intesting: I wonder what else he has for sale...?

Probably nothing spectacular (I wanted the NiO and BaSO4 but I've enough to experiment with as it is) maybe useful to those making unusual salts/effects.

Must get round to finding out what colour burning Niobium Chloride emits, it's starting to bother me.

Hi, Sorry if im digging this post up as found it in a search.

I just wanted to update you on Keten (the chems supplier from poland)
i have noticed quite a lot of bad press about him, wheras i have ordered from him a couple of times (only in the past 3 months or so) and i havnt realy had any problems with him, there was one time when there was a problem with a shipment and slight lack of communication but i gave the guy a call and all was sorted out and the delay was due to a strike of the polosh post office.

Are you talking about Niobium, Nickle or both?

Niobium emits in the ultraviolet, and the purple spectra. It depends on the burning temp I suspect as to what you get.

Steve - Just the Niobium, not the sort of metal I run into often, although I just found a source of Tantalum etc.

Mumbles - Fascinating, I'll look and see if he's got any left/whether it is suitable to mix as a composition.
I presume the lower the temperature the more purple it's going to be.

Ah, Niobium is Nb.
I've just finished my last exam for my 3rd year chemistry degree, one of the modules required memorisation of the whole periodic table (not f block). Also to go with that a random bit of trivia. Halfnium, Tantallium carbide is the highest melting point material discovered, with a m.p of about 4300 C.
Biker - Where are you getting your odd metal salts? Do you have a cheap supplier or are you working with a company like Fisher / Aldrich?

Memorising the periodic table, you'll be able to sing the Elements song (Tom Lehrer) then :D .
I'll bet you're glad to get that last exam out of the way, hope you do well.

I wrote Niobium because I couldn't remember the symbol .
The unusual metals and salts are cheap suppliers on ebay! I can pm a list to you although I have mentioned them on the forum. I presume the chems are surplus. When I worked in labs we disposed of loads of redundant materials, wish I had some of them now.

Wyvern,

Agree with Karl.

Ordered some stuff from Chemicus a couple of years ago. First lot came, second lot, no chems, no refunds, no communication! Lost my money - guy is a crook stay away!

Biker, I remember my dad telling me about when they introduced COSHH at his work (pathologist at the hospital). All the chemicals they didn't really need and couldn't be bothered to write up a COSHH assesment they just threw away, including a whole pile of KCN with some alkali down the drain. It's a good thing the lab just up the drainline wasn't disposing of unwanted acid...

You can find those chems for a lot less money. :D
