I'd start a charcoal business if I knew it was profitable. Unfourtunately I wouldn't be making more than 100 grams at a time...

I have several GREAT trees right in my back yard.

Horse Chestnut, a small palownia I planted for this purpose - Apple - Arbutus/Madrona, Pine, Liquid Amber Maple, grape... among many.

There's willow with lots of dead, snappable branches downtown.

My suggestion to all of you is to find a place you can order Balsa wood in bulk online.

The charcoal from it is so naturally fluffy that even when you press it - especially when it's underoxidized - it still tends to "Explode" rather than burning slowly.

In this way, it's great for small devices like firecrackers - if that's your niche. I find it quite useful knowing that my black powder won't fail under any amount of pressure.

again there's nothing wrong with the exploding fountain once in a while.

OAK? Not for fast bp if thats what u mean? Its a hardwood read the numerous posts already written about woods suitabilitys for charcoal!

And Sodium Percarbonate is fantastic for cleaning your whites whiter than white.

Alrightey then.

Thank you.

I've been looking around geology stores recently, they seem to have quite a few organically formed, and very unique crystals.

I picked up a bit of barite while I was there...

They're great resources if you're looking for experimental projects and only need small quantities (crystals often around 1X1 inch, etc.)

Creepin_Pyro, do keep us up to date on this supplier, has your item arrived? and what packaging did it come in?

Well, the seller 888malc is no longer registered on Ebay, I haven't received anything, and he has ignored 4 emails requesting an ETA for the items.

Nice.

While on the dodgy/slow suppliers, that eBay seller 888malc is a bit (well very) dodge, for starters he sells poisons and when I checked he is not registered on the poisons register, nice and illegal then. I have a friend who bought something from him a while back, after 6 weeks nothing came so he asked for a refund and got arsed about by 888malc (his real name is Malcolm Braithwaite or surname/alias being Askew). For two and a half weeks over a dozen emails were sent asking for a refund, no reply, then out of the blue a reply in poor English saying 'I post it tomorrow'.

Note that this eBay seller illegally uses Royal Mail to ship hazardous chemicals, also his items come with illegal labels that give no indication as to the dangerous nature of the product. From another source; 888malc sells Methanol (a poison, all sellers are required to be registered, which he isn't) which is also classed as 'LQ0', which means that it has to be transported by an ADR courier in ALL quantities. 888malc sent it in a flimsy bottle (without a child proof closure, another legal requirement for poisons) with insulation tape round the neck, a plane paper label with "Methyl Alcohol" inkjet printed on it which was cello-taped to the bottle (not a full retail CHIP compliant label as required by law), and to top it off it was sent by Royal Mail, it wasn't even recorded delivery.

not anymore, he got booted out of eBay a day or so ago, I`m astonished he survived This long in all honesty, I also have dealt with him (over 4 months for my Potassium Carbonate to arrive!).

guys definitely not wanting to come across as justifying the poor service that 888malc has obviously given to some of his buyers but as our hobby is likely to come under the heading of "illegal" if push comes to shove I personally don't care who I buy my chems from as long as they are what they are supposed to be and are packaged securely.

I appreciate spec sheets are the industry standard when buying BUT when buying ourselves were not industry and shouldn't really be obtaining the chems we do and certainly not for the reasons we do.

As long as no one is put at risk I buy from the cheapest supplier?

Here here...i couldnt agree more. I think its a great shame that this supplier has been banned. I obtained some very hard to get chems from this guy, that i wouldnt be able to get anywhere else.

I cant understand the constant persecution of ebay chem sellers. Do you guys really think other sellers who are not on ebay, like Hobbychem for example, and other suppliers who shall remian nameless, never break the law? I dont think so. Ive bought many chems from sellers who are supposed to do things by the book and received them through the post.

I personally think its a great shame that someone had to stick their oar in, and get this guy banned. I hope he opens another account and resumes trading.

it`s everywhere now and creeping in daily, the "Nanny State" idea is no longer funny anymore, in the Netherland Dutch eBay you can`t sell Sodium Chloride without raising eyebrows!

eeewwww it sounds Chemical, ergo it Must be dangerous!

after 9/11 and 7/7 everything sucks now! :(

To put this into perspective, IMO there is quite a difference between someone mailing charcoal powder (which is a flammable solid) in the mail, and someone mailing Nitrobenzene in a glass container housed in a jiffy bag. The first may technically be flaunting the regs but wouldn't concern me atall, but the second is most definitely putting people at serious risk. I also seriously doubt that a single individual 'sticking their oar in' could've lead to this guy being banned, more like sheer volume of complaints!
