Sasman: Very nice shell, just love it. was it a barium nitrate core were used? than coated with red star composition.

View Post

The stars were Redgum Fueled stars out of Tom perigrins book The inner core was 15% Ti 100 mesh Flake 80% Crys 6 .. I'm scared to use barium nitrate until i get my star rolling skills a bit better..

It weights 580g :D So I really don?t know, if 40g of good Lift-BP would be enough..... It fits in quite good. Only about 1 or 2mm space between shell and tube....

Edit: And of course we?ll film it! :)

Sasman: I had been making core from Barium nitrate for sometime. I would never roll barium composition in a rolling stars machine but if I need too, I just used a plastic bowl (16 inches). The reason is the dust keep flying around in a star rolling machine. The way I do it, the composition is added with hot water so that the glutinous rice starch will bind the whole composition (Make into paste like), than cut them into 3mm than I round it with my finder (With glove on).

What is the Redgum Fueled stars out of Tom perigrins book composition like? Is it okay to share it. Thanks

Paul: Your canister shell sound very heavy. You have to deal in with the lift charge but I think you should have it more initially and than reduce slowly. Maybe you should try with 60 grams. This is just my suggestion.

Rob, what did you use as burst? Whistle on hulls? KP on hulls with whistle booster?

Very impressed, keep it up.

I fired a dummy 4" cylinder shell a few days ago. It was construced according to the instructions given on Passfire, with a few substitutions of materials, and obviously using dried peas in place of the stars and break charge. It weighed a little over 600g, and was lifted using 50g of pretty coarse BP, and a rather long mortar (about 1.25m), making it gentler than it may have been otherwise. The spolette was designed to give approximately a 3.5 second delay, before igniting a little flash in the end of the tube to show when the shell "broke." On firing, the flash ignited just a little after reaching the top of the flight, so when I come to fire a live one (probably NYE) I will use a slightly shorter spolette. (It went plenty high enough, so I don't want to risk damaging the shell or mortar by using more lift) Overall, this was a very encouraging test, and I look forward to firing "the real thing."

[EDIT] Just seen the video, sasman. That is indeed a HUGE break - great stuff!

Rob,
Very nice, looks like you have the shells pretty much spot on.
It is great to see so many of the people advancing in leaps and bounds and from their write ups it is easy to see the satisfaction that they are getting. This also helps encourage those who have not perfected there tests to keep on trying.

Keep up the great work guy's.

Hey there, The shell builder seems pretty much Spot On......It is a Nice looking, Appearingly well built shell. At 580 Grams, Shell weight , Cylindrical, his Lift is Right, Especially since it is Bottom lifted and bottom Fused. While 80 Grams would be spectacular, I don't know the risk of a Flowerpot from the Spollette or Time Fuse or Bottom Disk Blowing through from a heavy lift would give hime a chance to enjoy his work. The standard Lift Would Be 1 OZ of 2FA Per pound Of Shell Weight, and Generally 10% more for a Cylinder Shell, in his case 40 +4 Grams.

He will Have to dial it in from his video, but it is a nice example of classic Spiked Cylinder Shells.

Adding 50% Lift won't do anything to enhance what already looks to be a great shell.

Here are a few shells i used to Dial in my lift powder for my 3" Plastic hemis..
TestShells

They may not look impressive and tho there only a test shell using cheap Redgum Strontium Carbonate stars..The camera was about 90 yds away hieght of burst 300 foot

They have Given me the Biggest buzz sofar .. :) ..Every thing seemd to come together on the very first shell...Comet stayed intact you could clearly see the spinning shell give a wavy appearce to the rising shell...

Then just as it reached apogee BOOM!! Massive break Some may say way to big for the small stars but when you are stood 30 yards away and looking up it was F&%*ING Fantastic and to top it off the break appeared to be a lovely growing Globe above my head....Then The second shell was just as good..  :D ..Now im going up stairs while im on a roll with my GF   to see if i can manage 2 firings of my own !!..
Burl Horse thanks for the Tips on dummy shells ill use that method with my 4" and 6" shells...But i fired these some time ago...

Thanks for all your advice, burlHorse and the others!

My problem with the lift-charge is the blackpowder. I use CIA-method blackpowder. This is quite fast and good stuff but no commercial blackpowder. So I ask myself if 60g wouldn?t be better.

But as said before, this shell fits in the tube very neatly. So I think I?ll use 40g or a bit more, as burlhorse said.

Hopefully we can shoot this shell together with a few other 3" next week...

The Formula was Shimizu Potassium Perchlorate 66, RedGum 13 , Strontium Carbonate 12 , Charcoal 2 , PVC 2 , Dextrin 5 , The video camera does'nt catch the color very well they are much more red than the video shows..

Tonight we shot a few shells. I?d like to post the video of my 4" cylindrical shell, so here it is.

It?s one of many videos, I?ll take and make a big one out of it :) Somewhere in the future...

The shell did NOT work as expected, because the spiking was not good enough. The casing was too thin, so many stars didn?t ignite and were blown blind.

But anyway, here it is.

4" shell

I decided to add another 20g to the lift. In the end it was 60g of relatively good CIA-blackpowder.
