I have used spolettes a lot before. My spolettes were (are) about 10mm in OD and 8mm ID. If it is to small it will have problems burning through. But 8mm is not minimum.
If you find BP hard to compact in a spollette, mix 2 parts BP an one part sulfur. This helps the compacting greatly. I use this composition for delays in my rockets.

This is a picture of one of my silver tail spolettes.

And here is a completed one.

Thanks Karl and thanks Yugen!

I hammered 4cm riced black powder in small increments into a 8mm ID 10mm OD tube. A few tests gave a average burn rate of ~3,5sek. I think this is ok due to the fact that the two blackmacth leaders will add their time to the delay, too, when it is finished.

That should work.

Good evening everybody! After the failure of the first 3" shell, I built another one. This time a ring shell.

The stars were 15mm cut stars. I used 9 of them. It worked great. Becuase it was only one shell the effect was quite "lonely". But anyway: IT WORKED!!! :)

Here?s the video:

Thats a very nice shell Paul. What a fantastic effort! The symmetry is excellent.
What ratio of BP to corn cobs did you use?

Nice one, the ring came out really well. Must have been a fast comp, was it using flake aly or Ti? Also what was your bursting charge? Very nice thought mate you should be pleased with yourself :D

The star composition was:

66 KNO3
13 Charcoal airfloat
10 Al 50?
8 Sulfur
3 Dextrine

As burst I filled each hemi half with pure corn cob mix and filled the rest up with bp coated CCM. As a booster I put 2g of 70/30 flash in the centre.

Good idea using a inert filler for the places no burst is needed! I have done the same as you know in one of my 5 inch shells. What type of aluminium was used? Was it flake? I have been working on tigertail - blue round stars, they will be dry by the weekend so i will test them, i used 4mm x 4mm pumped blue stars as the cores. Will use them in a 4 inch shell at some point after silly season :D

That my friend, looks like a real beauty. I'm literally drooling.

I'm guessing the outside cut stars are a charcoal streamer of some sort, but could you enlighten us as to the inner stars?

Also, may I be the first to clamour for a video of the thing actually going up?

Hehe, the outer are Charcoal/Al Streamer and the inner balls you see is bp-coated puffed rice. Ran out of CornCobMix ;D

8g flash in the middle and two 4sec spolettes :D

Nice one mate, very nice shell!! I am working on a few myself, my saturn shell is being improved as my first one went like this.....ring broke very well but the planet dropped, the fix will be a faster more energetic planet burst charge. That will do it i know!!! Love ya double time fuses, and like me your out of corncob so are using good ol' crispies!! :D

Do you think it is a problem, that I packed the flash losely onto the bp-coated break charge?!

It is KClO4/German Dark alu flash.

There are many mixtures using KClO4/Al and even sulfur in it. So I thought it would not be a problem.

Any suggestions for the next shell?!

I would not think i will be a problem Paul, this is done quite often without a problem. I never use flash to boost i always use whistle and i have great results perfect rings and the same break charge will break a cylindrical shell very well. Maybe try a saturn shell, just because i am too :D See who makes the best, my latest uses a blue planet and a tiger tail ring, i hope it works :D

Your shell looks really good paul!

I put my flash in losely and it works good. I dont think the sulfur will be a problem. There is not very much friction in the burst, but don't drop the shell...
