Here is my 6" shell...

Only 2 rising shells ignited, and a few tiny defects in the main shell. A gap, the inner petal kid of stayed there... but all was pretty good. I just wish the video captures the colors better.

Great shell ! I've noticed a similar effect in a smaller 3" shell with a gold streamer pistil and red outer layer, that the pistil was blown to small floating dust, sort of, while the outer layer broke wide and symmetrical. I think yours worked well. How high was the break ? I was trying to work out your lift charge, I think you could have gone an ounce more lift ? Still, it worked well, and safe, and looked great. :)

I'm convinced... I was going to order some materials for 4 and 6 inch shells... I better get started.

P.S. - *love* the ascending flowers effect !

Nice one, liked it very much! What was the size of the inner petal? It looks like the inner petal may need to be bigger. I would remove the flash and but KP as the inner burst, or use smaller carrier and original burst charge. Very nice though i look forward to more videos, try to borrow a nice DV camera to capture the colours.

Well done!!!!

The inner petal was 3", I think I should have made it 4". But I am getting 8" shell stuff so I have more room to work with. But I am getting a better camera so next vids should be better. In fact I jsut got a DV cam, which SUCKED at fireworks, and am returning it. I will be making a few more 6", 4" and 3" shells with video to come soon!

Yes i think that would be a good idea making the inner petal 4 inchs, be nice ti see another 6 inch the same but with that being the difference. Also like i said i think 6 inch does not require a flash booster, just a faster burst in the inner petal. Keep the good work up and i look forward to a thumping 8 incher!

Well thats the best Home made 6" shell i have seen superb... :D ..I just loved that symmetry awesome..

I have no idea of scale...but that looked pretty much near the burst i am looking for in a 6" shell.. The only problem i have when watching the videos apart from the fact that video dont capture all the fine detail colours etc.. is there is no way you can judge the scale..When i am up & running i will fire a few shells against a very tall bridge so you can get some idea of the scale..

Looking forward to some more of your shells Rob, been ages since you posted any pictures or videos. Good idea getting the bridge in the picture, i have yet to make a 6 inch but one is near being complete i just need to fill with KP and paste her up. What bursts did you use in your 6 inch you fired ages ago, was it plain bp with no booster?

I'm very impressed! Can you give a few details on the 4" shell? I pressume the 6" details are the same as the previous one? Your stars are very round and consistently sized - good workmanship there!
I'm looking forward to seeing the video.

Made a little 4 inch waste shell, got rid of some white pill box stars and some purple stars. Also some titanium stars in lift. A small bottom shot was inside too!

Vid select videos then the one with the longest name! 4inchpurplewhitepillboxwithbottomshot_NEW.avi

can anyone tell me the theorie or difference between using long fuse down into the tube, and side fuse through the tube with the shell sitting on bp?

There are a number of differences, I will just touch on a few of them.

Fusing to a lift cup on the bottom of the shell allows for a totally sealed plugged bottom on the mortar tube. It also allows for the use of quickmatch. Side fusing allows a shell to be sized slightly tighter in the tube, since no fuse ( or quickmatch ) has to run beside the shell. Top fusing allows shells to be reloaded in the mortar after one is fired ( subject to ensuring no smoldering debris in the tube ) Related to this is that a commercial shell comes with a quickmatch leader, side fusing requires measuring lift powder at the time of the shot, loading it, cutting timed fuse, inserting that, then lowering the shell on top of the lift. Top fusing you just grab the shell, unfold the leader lower the shell in and it's ready to go.

One-shot "hobby" mortars are more likely to be side fused. A hobbyist who is not using a quickmatch leader may prefer the side fuse method to conserve visco or blackmatch fuse.

Heres a few photos and a video clip of a 2" cylindrical shell I fired last weekend.
The casing was dry rolled from 3 turns of 90gsm kraft with a liner. The burst charge was 3.5g of 2Fg equivalent BP held in a central 1/2" tissue paper cannulle. The shell was spiked with 12 verticals and 5 horizontals using flax twine. The shell was pasted in with 3 turns of 90gsm kraft paper and lifted with 8g of 2Fg equivalent BP.

Looks like a very professional 2" shell JamesH. Nice break too!
my friend: What's that?

me: It's a fuse.

my friend: Oh.

Thank you, I will try a few more adjustments to try and maximize the burst radius.
