Here is a link to a video of a 48inch shell, fired in either China or Japan (can anyone recognise the language?) Very impressive, nice shock wave too...

I really want one. It was so far away it seemed to move gracefully through the sky with no hint of slowing down. If if was in real time I make that about 1km away from the camera, that's a long way! No 25m exclusion here, more like 500m!

AMAZING!

I downloaded that video a while ago from a Japanese site. The site had many videos of large shows, shells, etc. If I find the site I will post it. The shell is definately Japanese. They are well known for their expertise in shell making. Believe there is someone from the US who went to a Japanese factory that makes the large shells and has shot off some 36" shells in California.

Harry over at Skylighter is frineds with the guy he told me. Said it takes about a month just to make the shell hemisphere. It is made so that it is like a pumpkin and the top is lifted off and loaded that way. I honestly dont see any way of flipping two hemispheres into each other :D . Just thought I would share....

I've seen this video before on some other website, which also had pictures of the mortars used to fire these gigantic shells.

I wonder how a 48" flash-report-shell would sound...

Ear bleedingly loud? or maybe not how it would sound, how it would feel would be better a better question, I know what 4inch up to 8inch shell breaks feel like when your right under them, this would be something else totally...

I'm not sure I'd want to carry a 48" mortar tube far! or dig the hole by hand!

Just wanted to correct the fact on the title - the shell in question is not the biggest in the world. The biggest shell to record measures 54.7 inch and weight around the 800kilo mark - producing a fireball about 0.75miles in diameter. It was shoot back in 1988 (I think) in lake toya in japan. Lake toya is the place where two 48inch (probably the same is the one shown in the video) are being shoot every year - together with a few 24 inch and few dozens 12inch just for good measure :)

A link with pictures of what the mortar for firing the monster looks like: http://japan-firewor...ggestshell.html

Also, an interesting feature is the shockwave caused by the explosion of the shell (visible in the movie as the camera shakes).

Thanks a bab for that site I forgot the name of it for a while. Amazing pictures of some of the world's best ball shells and amazing effects I have never seen before. If no one has visited that site you should immediately and give it a good browse.

Those people had to be atleast a 1/2 mile away from that. I dont think they felt the shock wave more the person filming possibly jumped a little at the loud noise. At some of the Grucci shows I have filmed I find that in the finales when I dont expect a couple of large salutes go off everyone tends to jump a bit. Thats what I think it was.
