Hi

I have a lot of spare Mg ribbon that I bought a while ago and have no use for now. I'd like to get rid of it but can't figure out how to send it legally.

I know it's a dangerous good and must be sent by a courier who accepts it, but the problem is I just can't find any that do. Can anyone name any that I could have a look at?

Also I'm a bit stumped for the regulations on packing it.

I've got quite a lot because I bought 3 reels of it a while ago to get free postage and used about quarter of one reel at the moment after many months.

I'm carrying on looking at Google for the regulations but any help here is appreciated
It's really tempting to stick a small quantity in a plain envelope and send it but not very responsible, I am not going to do that.

This is what someone who sells it on ebay has said:

" This item is regarded as dangerous goods DG Class 4.1 (Flammable Solid), therefore require transport by a special courier. The item will be dispatched using an authorised company by road transport and it will be appropiately labelled with the hazardous nature of the metal and packaged by approved UN Class 3 (unbreakable) container."

Anyway I want some magnesium ribbon, are you thinking of selling it or disposing it? I would like some if its going cheap , I could help you sort postage aswell

I was thinking of selling some of it, like you say on eBay it's selling for quite a lot and I could make my money back. I just need to sort out a legal and safe way to send it!

I've not used couriers before. I've done a couple of online quotes to see how much sending a special item would be and it's come back like ?32.00 to send a small package.

If someone can come up with a courier that's ok with me sending a small bit of magnesium ribbon and doesn't charge the earth I might send them a metre or 2 for free if they want it.

How big are the rolls? 25mtr? how much do you want per mtr? or per roll?

I shall probably take some if we can get a courier for a reasonable price, which courier shipped it to you ?

On eBay right now it's going for ?0.97 and I've seen 1 metre go for ~?3 + 2.50 p&p

I'd only want like 50p a metre, its the damn postage that will make it expensive

Unless I just stick it in an envelope like everyone else probably does, but...

Here in the states it's legal to just ship it like that even though it is a flammable solid, it's powder that causes ishues for shipping. powder needs to be mixed with turnings or large shavings and I belive it all needs to be marked with an ORM-D sticker

I'm starting to think ordinary post would be ok for small quantities then, because it's not exactly dangerous in small quantities, and there doesn't seem to be any other alternative.

I'm posting this on here so anyone can correct me if they think it's a really bad idea.

I dont think the person on ebay uses a proper courier to be honest. It says in his feedback, he uses a first class stamp and envelope.
I think, having done some research, that its gonna cost around 30 quid to post with a courier.
Id pay 50p a meter for some, how much have you got?

Stick it in a strong container and stick it in the post I say, lets face it it wont ignite by itself, and if the lorry/sorting office was to catch fire a few yards of mg aint gonna make any difference.

You can pick up a leaflet of prohibited items in the mail from any post office- they usually have it out on display somewhere, so you don't have to ask.
