THAT was D1?? No damn way! I have tried D1, and fish glitter, it does not glitter, it a charcoal star!! But I do remember reading about the difference in aluminum can have a drastic effect on the glitter. As well as other ingredients, but to a lesser degree. Oh well, I guess I am just going to have to make stars and test test test again....

Thanks Sasman!

Alanys site gives a few good tips regarding D1 glitter. You can?t make them into cut stars or rolled stars, only pumped, because you have to go with a maxmimum of 8% water for D1 glitter.

If your D1 didn't glitter then it either wasn't D1 or was made incorrectly. After being given that formula personally by its creator and going through numerous batches of it I've never had one fail to perform. And Paul is correct, keep the water for dampening to no more than 8%. I prefer to keep it down in the 5%-6% range. And no milling is required typically. If your KNO3 is a bit grainy then you can mill it for a half hour and maybe get away with it. Too coarse a charcoal will screw things up as well. Use commercial hardwood airfloat for best results. Using the faster BP charcoals (willow, paulownia etc.) will cause issues as well. Could you have perhaps made it with the incorrect formulas that were circulating which called for 58% KNO3? That makes for a much faster burning star than the correct 53%. Most if not all of the folks who had these incorrect proportions posted have corrected them at our urging (we thank you...the man who created D1 thanks you).
I would add that if you work the Al types correctly you can get this formula to even give a long lasting strobe effect. A nice bonus where one need not mess with coating magnesium and all the other headaches that go with strobe stars.

Ok I made a few rockets, here they are, 3 of them.

This is a 6 ounce bp end burning rocket with my variation of ruby red stars.
Stats:
engine:
41 grams
1/8" nozzle
4 inches long
5/8" ID

Header :
83 grams
2" cylinder header
fused with visquick with no other delay

The stick was 32".. No attempt to balance this rocket was made. I learned is is not needed. In the video the rocket heads into the wind, its not from the balance on the stick 2smile.gif See my test video for that.

Total rocket weight 136.4 grams (with a 12.4 gram 1/4" diameter round stick)

Pre firing picture:

6oz BP end burner identical to my ruby red rocket. This has conkling blue stars.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is another BP end burner. It has a header that weighs in at 86.4 grams, the total rocket weight is 144.6 grams. The header is 6 whistles to Ti reports.

The red was very nice, very clear. The blue looked a bit pale but maybe that's just the camera? I especially liked the whistles. The bursts were fairly symetrical. Nice work.

Thank you very much. You were right in your earlier post that is some amazing glitter! I keep on watching that last rocket video with the six whistle to report inserts. Just love the duration and noise they made. Thanks for sharing the videos everyone going to go now and watch.

What were the size of the whistles?

I put together a very simple model for my 1lb rockets this evening, just to give me some idea of how they could potentially perform. Feel free to download the spreadsheet and try your own values. Let me know if you make any improvements.

Firework rocket model (MS Excel, 1.1Mb)

Here are the initial results - they seem reasonable:

1lb motor and stick:

1lb motor, stick and 50g (1.5") salute:

1lb motor, stick and 200g 3" ball shell:

The model shows the importance of the delay, explains why my motor & stick daylight tests always vanish into the sky and suggests that you can't break the sound barrier with a 1lb BP motor B)

Don't really think you can improve that - It looked fine to me.

Good flight. Tail showing all the way. Spherical Burst right on apogee. Good long hangtime.

Can't spot anything I'd want to improve....

Hi all
I fired my first rockets on monday. one was an endburner the other a coreburner and had mixed results.

ENDBURNER
case: 80mm long,12mm ID,3mm wall
nozzle:powdered kitty litter rammed in a converging/diverging type design with a 4mm choke

The coreburner was pretty much the same just with a 4mm core 3/4 the length of the grain.
My propellant for both was 18/9/3 milled for one hour

The launch.
the endburner didn't really preform at all,it must have lifted 5" out of the tube and spun round a few times(look quite funny, barely had enuff thrust to leave the tube  )

the coreburner was abit more promising,it did leave the tube, quite fast and reached about 40/50 foot then turned left.

My thoughts with the coreburner are: as the core burnt out so did the initial thrust and after that i had a balance issue, maybe my guide stick was to short.

I think the obvious reason with the endburner is that 1 hour milled bp is nowhere near fast enuff.

P.S. I was going to video them but completely forgot. i wish i did, i'd have put the endburner video in the joke thread as it was funny to watch :D
