hi, i had some success with my home made tooling, brass tapered spindle, brass rammer,it looked the part and the finished rocket looked great!,and thats about it!!.i when "up on moors"for a test fireing and i got more of a "mine on a stick",the rocket reached the dizzy height of ooohh lets say 600,no 800,no 1000 yes a 1000mm! and blew out its top clay plug very interesting! could this be down to dodgey ramming,or more charcoal needed in my comp help

Sounds like it was not rammed hard enough. What comp ratio are you using.

Start with your end plug, if that's what blew. Ram it harder/longer and see what happens. I had the same problems, trying to cut down on weight by making a smaller endplug. Not a good idea, most of them blew. With the longer endplug, it work wonders.

If you now blow the tube to smithers, then back down on eigther fuel or spindle length if you can.
Adding a bit (say 5% incremets) of coarse charcoal slows the fuel down, and might help. This also gives a good tail.

Or you can choose to cut back on the spindle length, only problem there is no going back if you do not have the right equipment.

Just my 2 cents, but I've been there and done that.
