charcoal- how do we know that it is made now?

hi nice shades!i " believe" natural charcoal still contains a certain amount of volatiles which help to give bp its umpth,also i believe activated charcoal, or is it activated carbon ? that is of little use in bp although i tried some"its all i had at the time" in some ball milled meal and it was a bit hard to light but did light, slow burning!
