Yes its there for two reasons,one being to create back pressure (like tissue paper) and the holes passfire to the stars
Also 1/4 (as a rule of thumb) of the stars weight should be ok for lift as your using commercial BP

The tissue paper isn't an issue I would imagine. The stars would have more than enough exposure to flame. I'd think it's an issue of over lifting and blowing the stars blind. A dusting with green meal may help, as would reducing the amount of lift. I usually use around 4-5g of lift for ~20g of stars in a 1" mine for testing.

Thanks for the video karlfox, (I enjoyed watching it) and for everyone's advice. I think I have a better idea of what I need to do with the mine now.That 1st attempt was thrown together pretty quickly so I'd have something to try at the beach. Unfortunately I haven't found a decent test site that is close, safe and discreet. so the beach trips are my best opportunity at the moment.
