Does any one out there have any info on where I can buy some Magnesium (Mg)?
I understand it comes in rolls or strips is that true or can i get fine powder?

but as far as i can tell they dont sale any thing less than 57kg at a time what do i do ? I cant use that much not even in the next three years:(
so is there any one else who might have the answer?

You can purchase it from http://www.labpakchemicals.co.uk in ribbon form,seems quite expensive though,and there is a minimum order of ?50,supose you could get some other chemicals from them to topup your order.

u can buy samll amounts in sum kiddies chemistry sets. 1 is 'salter science'. but it costs a hell of a lot for a small amount of ribbon.

Thank you for your help I'm sure those stars are gonna shine bright when i use Magnesium in stead of Aluminium.

Very expensive.

But I still think the reaction on my sons face will out weigh the expence in making the change from ally to magnesium.

I suppose he's going to be learning chemistry this year..

prices aint as cheap as i would like but had a very good service from him,he also sells red gum,pvc ect and magnesium in strip,powder, and block form.

Magnesium can be brought from most camping stores as part of artificial flint kits. The kit is basically a small artifficial flint stuck on the side of a large block of magnesium. Not exactly the best way to buy Magnesium but by far the easiest.

Experience tells me that you can waste a lot of time using the wrong chemicals such as block or mag ribbon. you should be trying to use a powdered Magnesium of 200 mesh or finer any thing coarser will not help a great deal in any formula.

They also have them on Ebay, tons of magnesium ribbon on a roll for pretty cheap!

Yes, but the hard part is getting it into a decent powder. As Rob said, you can't get away with using the wrong chemcials.

You will certainly get farther along towards a decent colored star using magnesium than the aluminum you have been using. Anyone have thoughts on milling magnesium 'ribbon'? It don't sound like a great idea to me.
Of course you know that mg needs to be protected(coated)in some cases. Just a reminder to those that may not be familiar enough with the process.

What do you do with magnesium anyway? Besides using it as an emergency fire starter.
