We are talking with the Royal Powder Mills to try and arrange a visit to the mills sometime end of June, beginning of July – it is about 7 weeks from now – and it’s not allot of time.
The Mills were used to produce Black Powder during the wars and after. They were closed and fell into misuse, but recent grants from the lottery allowed to polish them up and open them to the public.
The planned visit will be for US ONLY. It will not be during public opening hours. The mills will also try to supply an expert guide that actually worked at the mills, and the visit will be tailored more toward our level of expertise (so nobody will go into length explaining that BP is made of KNO3, S and Charcoal…. – but more to type of wood used, how it was dried etc….)
The visit will not only cover the BP manufacture but also the history of the mills and how the stuff was used. As always, we will try to make it a day event with lectures before and after, and maybe even a fireworks display.
There are two problems:
1) The mills will not go to the length of opening the mills specifically for us – unless we have at least 20 people visiting.
2) Visit is MID WEEK – as weekend the mills are open to the public.
To see that we can meet those numbers – we need some fast reaction here. Please Email to events@pyrosociety.org.uk or just post you are interested – but please – make sure that it is visible for you to come (assuming we will give you at least a month notice before the event).
Note – the mills are located in Hertsfordshire, and the cost of the event is expected to be 8-10 pounds for the whole day (including the entry and all the days activities).
I hope you everyone will join – I will most certainly be there! (here you go, we got one already!)
