Hey everyone, i am relatively new to pyrotechnics, i was just wondering if a form of H3 could be made with just KnO3 and charcoal, iv recently made my charcoal and it seems to be of a good quality. If so, what are the best ratios to make reasonable burst using KnO3 and charcoal? also would it be best using a similar technique to making BP, i dont have a ball mill so id have to powder by hand, id be best powdering each one down seperately to as fine as possible then mixing together and add water and leave to dry then powder again? any help would be much appriciated.

Thanks.

My suggestion? Search the forums ;)

Anyway you can use black powder as a bursting charge, if you don't have a ball mill take a look at the CIA method:

Hi Dan123, this is unlikely to work well on a small scale I'm afraid. What you describe is essentially a sulphurless black powder. There are some examples of these here:

The sulphurless mixes still need good quality soft charcoal (willow, alder, balsa etc), need as much of milling / incorporation as BP and will be more difficult to ignite and less powerful. As sulfur is cheap and available in every garden centre, I'd say to spend your time learning to make standard BP. A £4 pestle and mortar from Ikea will let you make 30g of BP with a few hours of hard work and its a great way to learn... There's a method for you here:
