Hi
iv searched the forums looking to see if white spirit would work as a substitute for isopropyl in the CIA method of producing BP, i saw that methylated spirit could be used but unfortunately i dont have any at the moment, just whit spirit. So could white spirit work as a substitue?

if by white spirit you mean the Turpene substitute (similar to BBQ lighter fluid or parafin) then no.

Just go out and by a 500ml bottle of meth spirit from Halfords for £2.
Alkanes and alcohols are close (according to my GCSE chemistry knowledge), but not close enough.

They aren't that close! In fact they are in a completely different homologous series: the acohols conatin and OH bond while the alkanes are hydrocarbons with only Carbons and Hydrogens. Therefore they have different chemical properties and will behave differently. So to answer the question (as YT2095 has already said), no.
