I have been thinking, would it be possible to add an effect to the Bp lifting charge of a mortar, and make impressive enough to be worthwhile? I mean, add steel wool or aluminum powder to the lifting charge, and get a huge fountain (albeit very brief). Would the added heat damage the mortar possibly?

Also, what would be the best size of steel wool? Very fine or very coarse? Maybe 000-0000 for smaller mortars and 0-00 for larger ones, or a mixture sizes.

Ive successfully added leftover chips of my cut star compositions from a bodged session into my lift charges and made a nice mine effect from the launches. Although it did dawn on me later that it will be quite redundant for a display as the mortars are usually located much further back than a mine would be from the audience. Usually out of sight.

Do you think that steel wool would make a good effect? Possibly just out of a civil war imitation cannon?

I think I`de be too worried about where it landed to employ it.
that stuff stays quite hot for ages, and it Would re-compress under that pressure.

I tried it out of a 3 inch mortar with a blank charge, and the effect was all right. It had a nice golden shower, much the color of a sparkler, about 8 1/2 feet high. I tried aluminum, but the color was to white, to bright, and much shorter lived. It did, however, produce alot of burning larger fragments of steel wool, I think I will try finer steel wool, cut it up, or just use steel powder. (any ideas on how to make steel powder?)

If I've ever got leftover stars or anything like that I just dump it in the mortars, the lift lights everything. Adding micro stars to the lift charge might be pretty cool, but I wouldn't add full size stars to the lift.
