Alright I'll try like 1.5 Mg instead of 1. I will probably try this tomorow, we have exams so its only a half day. Its been really cold lately so I haven't been doing much, but I want to test this out.

I made a small batch, I used a little more BaNO3 than I was going to, a little more came off the spoon than was supposed to lol. The batch was
.5g BaNO3
.2g BaCO3
.15g Mg
.05g PVC
I burned a small sample of this batch, it made a really nice looking green, and its not even dark outside! If my parents will let me use their camera I will make a video of it when its dark out.

EDIT: I made a couple videos, I had to make a larger batch because I ran out of the first one. It didn't look as good, and it didnt burn quite as fast, I think since my scale is less accurate at very small masses like I used in the first batch it scewed the ratios. It was still somewhat green, you can see the color reflected in the smoke and on a wall nearby. I might play around with the ratios a bit at a later time, but I dont have a whole lot of BaNO3 or Mg left, so if somebody else wants to that would be great. Based on how my scale was fluctuating when I made the small batch, I would suggest a higher portion of PVC.

Old thread digging up time!

After a lot of talking to my friends in Malta, I was gifted to be given official Maltese flash formulas. I have tried the red in small 3/8" beraq. They work very well indeed.

Here are some pics of them and a test video.

Im very pleased, the forumla contain no chlorates either!

Do you mind sharing those comps? I'm still searching for some nice flash reports with colour :)! Probably also for beraq making, right know I've only made them with GD Al/KClO4.
The video isn't very clear, but you can definitly see those nice red colours!

ATM my wheat paste is drying and I'll shoot my 3" multibreak shell (with stars, beraqs and bottom shot) in a couple of days ;)! I hope it turns out well.

Probably :P. I've already some compo's who should create coloured flash, but I still have to test them. And those beraqs from Karl looked really nice red so that's why I was asking about those compositions.

Yeah its top secret afraid, but put your mind to it and it really is simple. Only 4 chems, the green and orange are equal in colour saturation and brightness. Top formulas!

Potassium Perchlorate, Nitrate, Magnesium and Cl. Oh, it is so mighty simple.

Yellow is deadly easy. Easier than any other color...

The only one I haven't seen yet is blue. I know the Maltese make these.

Its easy to make colour flash, but to make it decent is hard. Yellow is easy, I made this a long time ago. I do have a blue flash but its not my formula, I have not used it much and its very exotic. They all use Mg, and no nitrates. Also none of my formula I have for colour flashes use chlorine donors.

There are videos of "good" blue flash you can see online. As far as the ones I know, fuels such as benzoates are employed, so they appear darker and less vibrant than others.

the ones in this video are obviously metallicly based, but are being viewed from a great distance.

Interesting stuff, I assume that they are all chlorate based then?
Phew that was close.

It's not too difficult to make a small blue flash, but the problem seems to be that when you try to make a larger one that will look good from a distance the temperature rise is so big that the colour saturation suffers. Videos can look a lot better than reality sometimes, as some cameras seem to have a good (and probably non-linear) colour response in the blue end of the spectrum.
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

I just tried 1 gram 60:40 Barium chlorate/Mg. It was hard to ignite (had to use a sparkler) but the report was better than with potassium /per/chlorate. Not the slightest green, though.

A sure-fire green report/flash comp:

KClO4....................4 parts
BaNO3...................3 parts
Al dark pyro flake ...3 parts

Replacing the dark Al with magnalium makes the color even better. The color, while definitely being recognizable, isn't deep or saturated.
