[edit] I really should have looked at the link PGF posted. It happens to be the same thing. It doesn't appear I can delete my own posts, so you will have to live with it.

You could also go here:http://www.pyroguide.com/index.php?title=Mines_-_3_inch. There are quite a few tutorials on that site.

I'm making a few 2" mines for a New Year event and would like to add some cracker inserts for more impact.

I have a bag of 1/4" x 2" tubes as a starting point. The mines will used in fairly close prox to the audience, so I'm hesitating on filling the inserts with flash (about 0.5 - 1 gram each). Any suggestions on how to tame them a bit?

Do I just bundle the crackers together on top of the stars? Any experience would be welcome please...

If they're the same 1/4" ID tubes that I have and you're observing the normal 25m safety distance I shouldn't be too worried. With normal 70/30 flash they make a pleasing crack, but unlikely to do any serious damage. Real easy to make crackers too if you have some 6mm shell fuse for delay, just cut 15mm lengths with angled ends, wrap a turn or tow of gluey paper around it and stuff up the end, hey presto. On top of the stars should be fine as long as you prime the cut ends of the fuse.
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

I've used small flash crackers in 1" cylinder shells. I put them right on top of the burst charge so they are propelled out the end of the shell. I think this would work in a mine on top of the stars. The ones I make are made from a pc of drinking straw with a short visco fuse hot glued in and about 1/2g of 70/30 flash. I then covered with one layer of Al foil tape so the straws wouldn't melt, got the idea from Caramanos2000.

Thanks for this - using the 6mm fuse is a neat idea. The 2" mines will effectively be part of a set piece and need to be close up, about 10m but behind a solid barricade. It's just for fun - neither a pro nor public event, but my reputation is at stake!

Given further thought I might use glitter stars (thinking D1...) in the closer mines and put the crackers in a couple of big mines at a good safe distance. Fired simultaneously this should give much the same impact.
