I've heard directly from SIG that it is a 10% soln. It is probably alright as is for binding the dragon eggs. For binding prime and such, I'd go with a 2-3% soln.

Is there a certain name for this product (other than nitrate dope)? I looked through a local hobby shop that carries Sig products and...a whole list of glues though, like "Stix-it" and "Core-Bond" etc...

It's called "Nitrate Clear Aircraft Dope". Comes in pint size and quart size cans. If your local hobby shop carries it, it will likely be in their airplane or adhesives section.

Just found an ebay supplier: model aircraft dope

This is the same brand I have, and it seems to work well.

Thanks for the link pyromaniac303 - I bought some from ebay to try.

It smells like MEK is the solvent. On drying, it leaves 17% by mass (it's roughly a 17% solution) of a water clear celluloid like film. This burns very cleanly at approx 2cm a second with a yellow flame, leaving no residue. So far so good... I look forward to testing it in some real compositions.

I have a few spare jars of it lying around too which I bought at the same time as the other, as I thought that the lids wouldnt seal fully and it may dry up. This was not the case though and my old jar seems to be fine, so if anyone whos going to the meet in March at Icarus's field would like some NC lacquer, let me know.

Let me know how your tests go Brightstar, would be interested to hear how it compares to your usual NC lacquer.

Dope should be thinnable with Acetone so if it gets too thick to use Look on Cooperman's site!

I always wondered why my lacquer is a dark grey green but it seems to work!

Has someone ever tried the stuff from Keten. If you order NC-lacquer you get a can of polish coating: is this really the right stuff?

Just for interest: One form of NC is the cotton-like pad matter called "pyro-cotton" down here. This is nitrated cotton and has become another chemical reagent: NC, right?

Can one make NC-lacquer dissolving such pads in acetone?

Has anyone tested the Ebay Five Star Adhesives Dope for stars? Brightstar - did you experience it? Thanks!

I've always used it, but then again that means I have nothing to compare it to... It seems to bind stars succesfully anyway.

Does anyone know if Rustin's Clear Metal Lacquer is Nitrocellulose Laquer or an acceptable replacement.

Posted Image

On the back it says extremely flammable, and to clean any brushes used for it to be cleaned with cellulose thinners.

Thanks

"A clear lacquer based on polymethacrylic ester, leaves a film that does not yellow or craze on ageing as do cellulose lacquers."
In other words, doesn't sound like it.
"Flammable" markings on lacquers are no indication that they are usable, most lacquers contain flammable solvents.

Thanks pyromaniac.

An alternative (not tested) maybe interesting to the community is "Cellulose Sanding Sealer" from Chestnut as seen here: http://www.chestnutp.....nding sealers

Should be quite the same as the Five Star Adhesive´s product...
