I somehow doubt the quality of the tumbler. And in it's ability to rotate the barrel
at 60 RPM, And also how much weight can it rotate.

Im not sure just emailed the seller regarding weight.I may anyway as it is cheap enough and if it does not work out i got a nice new motor witch im sure i can sell. But anyways another guy on another forums says its good enough so it all depends on what the dealers answer is.Thank you though. Also i feel i should point out the media in it will be elad and i intend to do it correctly. And i intend on making a case for it wich i will post a pic of when ever i get a chance to minimize sound and be safe in the event of a explosion.

Hi i intend on making a box to house my ball mill in to minimize noise and here is what i came up with (picture in link below, sorry i know its crude).Basically a wooden box with a good tight fitting lid with locks (it will be running outside) it will have various coats of varnish to help water proof it.In the inside of the box and lid will start off with one layer of silicone sealant then lead will be placed over it and that will be screwed in next another layer of silicone and then carpet also i shall point out that what i describe here will cover the whole box.I will use outdoor exstension cable to link it into the house.Depending on how big i make the box i may put in a wall of sand.

Hi im thinking of making a ballmill using a bench grinder motor (this one http://ireland.aldi....oduct_119.html) and well the only problem i can imagine having is the speed it goes at roughly around 3000 rpm now i understand a ballmill is optimal at 60-80rpm so my question is how can i make it go slower my first though was using a light dimmer but thats the reason why allot of motors blow a lack of power now i want to fit my ballmill in a relativly small box as i intend on having it in there to mineimise nose (im just gonna have a middle wall of concrete in the box. Also if anything goes wrong it should help minimze the damage.Any advice on making it slow down my theory is to gear it down but saldy i know very little about that also do you think this motor is good enough?

My motor turns at about 1750rpm but my jar turns at 60rpm. Its all about gears. Think of how fast a shaft of say 1/2" will have to turn to get a drum say 6" to spin at 60rpm. You need it pretty fast so it would be good to have a chunky motor. Mine was also from a bench table saw/sander/planer tool. Here is my mill for the record:

I would recommend a bike chain depending on the size of your jar. When using a belt with heavy loads, I find that it slips a lot. Use a V belt if you have to use or want to use a belt.

Its just a V belt with grooves on the outside so it has more flexability.

It doesn't slip as the belt is gravity tensioned and my motor weighs around 6kg. Also I have a hefty load in there of a 1kg milling jar and 25kg of media. Plus another 3kg of BP in there...no slipping for me.

Windscreen wipers have the torque, I used to use them for my old mill but the speeds you get are pitiful so unless you have direct drive to the drum like a bucket style star roller it won't turn fast enough.

you'll probably not need much luck but it would be cheaper to buy one from a scrappy!
My bvall mill is made out of a paper shredder that has hade a major face lift :P . It turns at about the right speed, maybe abit slow but that does not matter! Just longer to wait!
hope all goes well for you!

No you don't need antimony in your lead at all. It may make it last a while longer but it will work perfectly well without it. I casted 1087 14mm lead balls from a 7 shot mould. So if I actually got all 7 balls each cast (no way I did!) it would have taken 150 odd cast but it was somewhere near 250 times. It took me a good 3 hours and lots of burns.

I had a good ol' direct drive for my first mill and a windscreen wiper motor. It served me well. If I actually got more media for it the thing would have been good! But as a small mill it will serve you very well.

OK great,I understand the problems with milling Al and it coming into contact with oxygen but if i was to mill it would the lead do it as its Al is harder than lead (hopefully it will to make some 100 mesh for some nice sparks)
And thanks to all who helped me
