I noticed this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com....i...A:IT&ih=020
Looks kinda dodgy as its clear but that may be a good thing (you can see whats going on), from what i can tell it has adjustable speed and a timer. Seems to be a small capacity but if i can get 100g of black powder per load ill be happy.
Any opinions?

But they are charging a hell of a lot of money for that thing.
I don't know the situation in australia, but here there are alot of auction sites where you are able to find a good 2nd hand AC or DC motor for a few bucks.
But that of course is the easy part, it took me a while to get the bearings, belt and pulleys sorted out, but it was worth it though.
Have been running this puppy for a couple of years now and it has yet to fail on me, it can mill 2 kg of bp in 3 hours with ease.
Maybe you can make a chaindrive, chains and gears should be easy to find in various sizes.

4x pillow block bearings - $15 each ($60)
1/2" mild steel rod - $15
100% duty AC motor - $45
pullies and belt - $15
random wood and bolts - $15
wiring & switch - $10
Jar $10
Thats $170, motor may cost more and that doesn't include shipping for the bearings. So really im looking at around $200+ and a few hours of my time.

Ill break down my costs:
4x pillow block bearings - $15 each ($60)
1/2" mild steel rod - $15
100% duty AC motor - $45
pullies and belt - $15
random wood and bolts - $15
wiring & switch - $10
Jar $10
Thats $170, motor may cost more and that doesn't include shipping for the bearings. So really im looking at around $200+ and a few hours of my time.
Some cost saving ideas:
If you don't need speed control, a light switch will be fine and only cost like $1 and any old extension cord will work for wiring unless you have a powerful motor. I don't even use a switch...hard wiring to an extension cord will also put you some distance away (safer) when turning on or off.
Try a scrap yard for the shaft (rod), hit or miss, but very cheap if they have.
I use empty plastic peanut butter containers for jars...free after you eat the peanut butter, different sizes available too.
Cut it down to 2 bearings and use some cheap rollers, skateboard wheels, casters etc for idler side.
Hope it helps good luck.

Ive been having lots of trouble making a good ballmill for a decent price (under $200) as everything is either hard to find or expensive. Ive looked around and im in limbo.

A circular/flat shaped strip of dowel could be glued inside the bucket to act as a lift to shake & coat star making, plus a lid could be fitted to turn it into a ball mill if you use different buckets?

I was thinking abut that (i have access to one) but its to slow, would make a good start roller though.
What roughly should be the RPM (revolutions per minute) of a small ball mill be?
Im thinking that if you inserted a smaller bucket, you would get more revolutions RPM anyway? or is my logic wrong?
You could still use it as ball mill by stuffing the inside of the cement mixer with foam, and then just buy a ball mill jar/container inserted into the bucket? just think of the amount of stars you could make in one go! or the amount of other different powders/compounds you could mill at the same time with different jars!
