Hi guys,

A member of the forum alerted me to an anti-fireworks thread, submitted by residents of the area he lives in. I don't think I'll post the address of this forum, at least until I have permission from the respective member, it being a local forum. As I was posting a reply, I remembered that members of the Admin team had mentioned the usefulness of posting links to recent firework discussions, and so I searched google quickly for 'ban fireworks 2007'. Here are a few of the results.

This one is fairly recent, from the Mirror site.

This one has also been dead since April unfortunately, it refers to Scotland, but any sort of ban that happens in Scotland is going to affect us at some point.

blah blah, just the usual people complaining about dickheads who let them off in the street and who get all worked up because their dog gets scared and what not. I hate people like that, especially dog owners whose dog will bark for hours at a time pissing everyone off yet will be the first to complain when someone light a banger in the street.

Personally most bangers are not even that loud, i could understand if they were lighting massive bootleg salutes.

We live in a world full of health and safety where children ar not allowed to play with conkers, slide on ice, ride on bicycles without helmets, but every year we are allowed to buy tubes of cardboard containing dynamite

If you ever go to an Asian country some of the salutes there are damn crazy, in the Philippines you can pick up a brick of bangers for peanuts that are charged with 50g of flash powder each. Those things set off car alarms.

Men shuns £100 Sib, I just bought one today.. oh, wait, you mean REAL Dynamite. Thats just a name. :-)

A lot of the objections are ignorant, based on incorrect assumptions that fireworks are dangerous- " Fireworks are weapons " " loads of people are killed by fireworks each year" etc etc

Some of the objections are totally valid, when focusing on the volume of fireworks.:

" Loud bangs scare my dog "

To this I reply that there are new laws limiting flashpowder- effectivly reducing loud bangs. Also the loudest fireworks are not available to the public. Cheap noisy fireworks are now banned.

However, I feel it really does come down to this-

Toleration. It is a shame that fireworks are bad for animals- but they are only used on a few nights of the year, and people can take sensible precautions before Bonfire Night.

A sensible person, when putting on a display out of season, will always make local pet/livestock owners aware .


Finally, I live in rural Lancashire- there are gun clubs who are equal in volume to fireworks- every week.
