I remember now why I decided not to bother last time I considered this game a year or so ago! Take the sulphur from GD for example, there's no way an inexperienced person could possibly know from the info on the site which of the 2 sulphur links to chose, and why one would be bad and the other good. And worse, why one could make a dangerous composition!

For interests sake, I thought I'd try a small pile of my composition anyway, so I ground (in a ceramic pestle and mortar) 25g of my fertiliser and 5g of my charcoal, then halved this to make a 15g pile of meal (is that the correct term?). Put the pile on the obligatory first attempt piece of newspaper, lit the corner and retired.

The results were as I expected I think, mostly lots of smoke! The 15g pile took about 2-3 seconds to burn, so it was pretty slow but that was expected. The smoke cloud reached the top of the house before the pile finished burning. As a control test as it were, this is a perfectly acceptable result, as I expect to go through the following learning curve:

- Addition of sulphur produces a fast burn.
- Use of higher quality ingredients also produce faster burns.

Documenting this process should reinforce the learning and understanding of the chemical reactions involved. You'll be pleased to know I have now ordered some proper KNO3 from GD, some charcoal off eBay, and (before I saw this post) some sulphur powder off eBay. There's no info as to whether this is flowers of sulphur or not. How can I tell when it arrives?

You can pretty much guarantee that it is flowers, and that it will arrive by Royal Mail! I only know of one seller on eBay that sells Powdered Rhombic Sulphur and they only sell every now and then. To do a quick test, you can take a small sample of the Sulphur, and flush through with a little water (only for a couple of seconds), test with an indicator or pH meter. If it is mildly acidic it is flowers, if it is only just acidic or neutral it is Rhombic. This is not a fool poof method and can only be used as a basic guide.
