Dextrin Prices.

Just a quick question about how much you would normally pay for 100g of dextrin.
I Have just got 100g for £3.99 and wanted to know weather i was getting ripped off or not? :unsure:

Making it is very easy and is much cheaper than that, and I know it can be bought at a lower price. However if you are happy to spend the extra few quid for convenience sake, do it. If you want to buy a kilo on the other hand, I would look for a cheaper source. Chemicals are always much more expensive when you are buying such small quantities.

for 99p I get 1kg of cornflour and 3 hours later in the oven (long after my chicken has come out ) my cornflour has miraculasly changed colour and chemical structure leaving me with dextrin.

Honestly its that easy and if you over cook it slightly and get some crusty bits then just ball mill the lot to the best fine powder imagianable.

Much cheaper?

If you want to pay me £25 a kg Ill sell you it ready to use?

Thanks for helping out guys, Also, What temperature does the corn flour need to be at, and what colour does
it normally turn when it is ready?

it is Best done in an electric oven rather than Gas (gas gives of water vapor), also avoid Fan assisted ovens too (unless you want a face full and quite a mess to clean up).

I spread mine thinly on a clean baking tray and put it in the oven at 150c for about an hour, but keep checking it, you`re looking for a golden Tan color, not Brown, just a nice even tan.
it helps to give it a mix every now an then also, make sure there`s no un-reacted bits inside of clumps.

you`ll know when it`s right also as it will dissolve in water quite nicely, unlike the cornflour you used to make it with, and it`ll taste a little bit like the sticky you get on Stamps or envelopes (it might even be the same stuff?).

A good observation YT - it's similar to Maltodextrin - the gum on stamps and envelopes! (Mmm..tasty)!
Do it safe - Do it right - or - Don't do it at all.

Just for the record, I always make dextrin in an electric fan assisted oven - no probs so far.

I'm also pretty sure that homemade dextrin is actually better suited for pyro than the commercial stuff, which in my experience has been white in colour and not as effective a binder. All the more reason to make it yourself!

Well its lucky i can turn the fan on my oven off then, But i don't think my Girl will be happy.
Last time i had to use the oven for treating some high temp paint on an engine part.
Made the whole place stink for about 3 days. MWUHAHA! I do have a spare oven in my shed but thats gas.

I've always found the kitchen to have a nice baking smell when making dextrin...like cookies or something.

I tried making it once.

One word of advice, if you have a gas oven it is far too dangerous to make it yourself. All you have to do is raise a little dust, quite easy to do if it is very dry to start with, and you get a dust explosion; what a f*cking mess!

Electric ovens all the way!

Well i will pop down the shops tomorrow and get me some corn flour and give it a try :)
Just got to remember to turn the fan off on the oven :P
Also, if i make a batch of say 1Kg will it keep for a month or more, or will i have to coat it with something?

I made 2kg two years ago and it is still fine! Just keep it dry or it might go green.
