Getting training and experience firing shows using trade fireworks, has brought me contacts with licensed factory owners, trade sellers and several firework show companies. OK my degree in chemistry and 30 years industrial experience has meant that I can sensibly also answer questions. However I now have access to all the pyro I want, and can get paid for firing shows. If I wanted to set up a factory one of the factory owners has already offered to guide me through the application process.

what stops you ?

I don't believe there is a way to get truely legal in Australia, as is possible in other locales. I've talked to several people who have looked into it. You'd probably have to be 18 at least if there is even a way. From what I remember from talking to people, you can get a firework use permit, but there are quite a few hoops to jump through and it still doesn't specifically allow manufacture.

if you live in, south Aust, one of the territorys or Tasmania, you can purchase small home display fireworks at certain times of the year, you must buy a permit, hence your firework use permit " which is only valid for a week or 2 at a small price, supply proof of local residency and nominate the address and time you wil be letting them off, and notify the fire dept,

it is illegal for anybody ( excluding manufacturers like Paynes Wessex ) to make pyrotechnics, With a work cover certificate you can fire fireworks at large community shows, and your own large shows with city or council approval,

with this said, you wouldn't believe the amount of fireworks going off all over the place on newyears,, we have a large chinese comunity here in Australia and they all manage to import them and sell them on through out all communities

OK Put simply the subtext to my last post here (61) is that if you get well regarded by industry professionals then contacts will open to you.

You will start by knowing how to carry racks to the site, and if you are a pleasant and sociable friend to have around then you will make contacts with show firers, wholesalers, insurers, Law Enforcement people, and law making people. By that time you could have enough contacts to apply for manufacturing permits. I expect that Australia does have a manufacturing facility somewhere, just that you don't know where it is because you don't actually need to at the moment.

NO-ONE will grant you a manufacturing permit unless they consider you a safe person to have the knowledge! If you look at youtube most of the "fireworks" are just bangers/cherry bmobs/M80s and other laddish pranks using flash. That is a way to get noticed for all the wrong reasons, probably lose body parts, or good reputation.

I do commercial fireworks partly because a factory application could take me five years, by which time I would be looking more to retire than start a new business!

You are young! Get commercial experience, start to get well regarded by fellow professionals and LEOs and keep your nose very clean, (no record/felonies/convictions for anything). In ten years you could be well enough regarded to ask about a manufacturing licence, then you have to buy a suitable plot of land for which you will need lots of money!

Thanks phill 63 & Arthur Brown and everyone else. So deos all this mean I cant just rock up to the show and talk to the pyrotechin fellas a few hours befor they start setting up, well thats ok, I guess I can just wait till i'am 18 and do a course then. I have been looking at a few courses latly and I might check out a few more.

A decent firework show takes 40+ hours of preparation before show day, then may need 12+ hours on the day. BUT there is the terrible possibility of a bad accident if something is prepped wrongly. Start gently, make lots of friends, do as many courses as you can til other professionals accept you as competent, by then LEOs will also regard you as a competent operator, and you are half way to being a nationally regarded specialist.

yes, Pains Wessex is still alive and kicking here in Au, in fact one of their premises is only a couple of klms' from my home, there is another manufacturer , Howard and sons, just out west of sydney near lithgow, they have been there for 3 generations but they had a large explosion in Dec 07, which killed 2 men and near levelled the entire place, sabotage was believed to be the cause as there were still a couple of containers set far enough away to avoid damage which had been found to be opened,
i'm pretty sure they have rebuilt,

I also enjoy trying to fly a rc helicopter i have broken loads but getting better now nad have a blade 400 I am also a radio ham and work full time so its hard to fit it all in

Apart from pryo i like going out clubbing, parties and having fun driving fast cars.

My hobbies are also of pyro play the guitar ( i am learning to play it , clasic guitar),photography and Astronomy. I like railway modeling too,but because of time and money i haven't dedicated too much time to it.

I like rc helicopters too, and i should learn one day how to pilot one, because i have bought one some months ago and i don't know yet how trim it it is a Lama v3 helicopter)

-PC modding : PC Case mods mostly, and some peripherals, I have nearly 5 projects, but 2 are unfinished
-Electronics : From time to time, I mostly do them to save money instead of buying expensive devices
-Biking : Mountains, hills, I love it
-PC video games : They become more and more boring to me though.
-Listening to music : I'm addicted and I really can't live without music
-Singing : I kinda stopped, mostly because I think that my timbre sucks for Heavy Metal music.

Now then Chris, you are a man of many hobbies there. Some very interesting toys!

So when are you going to fire up the lathe and make your own engine and boiler, maybe even a fancy super heater and economiser with a high pressure boiler feed pump?

How is the car coming along?
