Hi there

I've been interested in pyro for a long time but it has only been fairly recently that i have started to do something about it. I managed to get some experience with the special effects guys on the Harry potter set for a week and I'm looking for some more work experience in the fireworks side of things. Thinking quite far ahead i was wondering if anyone knew who is doing the 2012 Olympic fireworks the bidding must have been and gone by now. It would be a great help if someone could tell me as it would be an amazing opportunity to help and watch the guys design and create an amazing firework show.

On a different note if anyone in the Buckinghamshire area could offer me any work experience with a company in fireworks it would be greatly appreciated. I need to learn as much as i can. I am currently studying chemistry, design technology and ICT at a-level.

Cheers
James

Well I doubt that the 2012 fireworks contract is already awarded, BUT there will be few bidders I expect. Mostly "Name" companies, and likely for close to cost price! Most big name shows are done for the prestige rather than the profit. The profit comes from all the jobs afterwards, being able to state on your advertising that you did the fireworks at.....

Most fireworks companies get lots of enquiries about assisting with firing. IF you are over 18 then look in all the directories and on the web for local companies. Expect to do a training course and perhaps have to pay for it, then be used as labour til you have proved yourself reliable and committed.

MSER (the regulations governing) make engaging minors or young people too difficult for most pyro employers. If you get lucky expect to work hard over the 5th nov week and probably not again for a while.

5Nov being a wednesday expect shows on the 5th 7th and 8th so do make sure you are available those days and the lead up and the pack down.

I should think it is fairly certain that Groupe F will get the contract.

Yeah I think Groupe F will be doing that one. Jack Morton worldwide have won the Beijing event (no surprises!), so Groupe F will no doubt be doing that one as well.

WhilstI am a GREAT admirer of Group F, it's a shame British companies don't get a look in.
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

The 2012 Olympics in London are going to be an amazing cultural experience. Imagine the hordes of international fans- Poles, Czechs, Russians, Hungarians, Latvians, Africans, Jamaicans, Indians, Pakistanis, Iraqis, Turks, Greeks, Thais, Australians, South Africans- who will have travelled as many as 10 miles to watch these games. :o

A bit controversial that one- in my view its just a rather astute joke. If anyone takes offense, reply and I'll remove it.
OK, interest in fireworks to be resumed in the spring. It usually is. ;)

No Australians or South Africans within walking distance they are in Earls Court. But every other nation has supporters within 30 mins walk. I live near there

Yup!, one of the (many) things that p**s me off about the Olympics, always the same names (Coca cola, Jack, Morton, and Group F) regardles of who the host country is. Mind you I suspect there will be a fairly large involvement from local Chinese firms at the Beijing games (particularly as they've just increased the pre-olympics export ban from one month to two months before the games! just how much stuff are they looking to chuck into the air !!!!!!!) BTW I could tell you some stories about the "olymic ideal" that would make you furious (from first hand accounts of friends that worked on the Athens games) but this probably isn't the place.

Edit!

Er. my bad, should have done a bit more research before ranting! seems JM have only had the contract since the last Olympics, my mis-remembering was down to the fact that JM and Groupe F have "been in bed" with the London new year fireworks since 2001 and I thought they'd had the Olympics for longer, still I'd be happy to bet money that JM and Groupe F get the London olympics. However my "Olymic ideal" comment still stands. And re. the comment of companies doing it for the prestige, neither Jack Morton or Groupe F need the prestige and there is PLENTY of money in the oylmpics, there is no way they are doing it at cost!

If it looks like it's coming towards you, it probably is!
