I find it rather worrying that with 1257 members there are not 12 that care enough to do a quick course in firing the product we all seem keen to have and use.

I also see courses like this as steps toward te "light side" to prove good intent and reason to possess fireworks. Similarly the ASP course, It's the stage pyro defacto standard and your name goes on the assn public register if and when you pass the course.

I hear what you are saying Arthur - but speaking as 1 of those 1257 members - I have absolutely no interest in buying cat4 fireworks. The only "good intent" I need to posses fireworks, is to please & entertain my family & friends - with cat2 & cat3.

It's a shame if this does not come off, but what I find much more worrying is out of the onethousand whatever 'members' only about 40 can be bothered to cough up the price of a cheap round of drinks to become real members and advance the cause...

The FORUM is a meeting place for lots of people with various interests in fireworks!

There are the "we make our own, comparable with the world's best" right through to " I really enjoy cat 2 & 3 with the family" with all variations in between. The UKPS is only of value to those who want to make their own, The UKPS will not get benefit from the membership of people only interested in commercial cat 2 & 3.

My Personal interest is firing displays for an audience and for profit. Having a Licensed Factory will be little use to me as I will never be able to get fireworks of my making classified for transport and display.

However the common feature of most UK members is a liking for firing fireworks, and in these days of determining competence by bits of paper, most of us should have a "bit of paper" to say that we care to do it carefully.

My degree is Chemistry and I enjoy knowing what is in the firework compositions. BUT I have a current firework price list on my desktop and with 3" shells at £1 there is no way I can even buy the components let alone the time and work for that money.

Now THAT is worrying! I was not aware that the paying membership was that low! As Arthur stated, we all have our own personal areas of particular interest in pyro, but overall we all want the same. Certainly for UK members, the potential benefits of financial support for the society are plain!

Sorry this is getting off topic.

The forum membership is currently 1527 subtract the members who no longer visit us, and subtract all the overseas members there are certainly not 500 members likely to be active UK pyros. Subtract all those with no interest in manufacture and the number of possible society members is much smaller than the 1527. Also factor in the low profile that the society has, it's hardly surprising that there are few members.

However all this is off topic!

The course is chosen to be a suitable training for a professional firework company manager (well the fireworks side not the business!)

I put the course here so that people who drive round occasionally with cat 4 have some evidence of being an approved cat 4 user rather than the owner of some suspect IEDs

If anyone gets stopped by the police - anything including speeding! then the possession of brown paper packs with fuse coming out will attract the wrong attention. Add in a certificate to prove that you are a trained firework person then things may stay on the easy side. This is largely why the course is here.

I have the certificate of training from the Assn of Stage Pyrotechnicians, and the Cat 3 training course certificate from Kimbolton, I want the cat 4 course certificate from this course to complete the set so far!

Realistically the Cat 4 certificate of training is essential to prove to others that you are a firework person not a Kewl or a terrorist.

The cost of the course is £800 + £20 per person for course notes etc.

If there are 5 then the cost will be £900 divided by five £220
If there are 10............................£1000...............ten £100

If I am certain of covering costs then the course goes ahead If not then NOT.

Deadline for emails confirming your willingness to send a cheque on demand is end of June. EMAIL to my forum address please

Arthur: I'll put a £150 cheque in the post to you today if it helps get the ball rolling. I'm sure others will follow.

This course will be very helpful for all of us as aspiring UK pyrotechnicians.

Me too!

This course sounds ideal for anyone who has an interest in using Cat 4 pyro- either commercially bought or self produced. So it would be very useful for anyone with an interest in this area.
OK, interest in fireworks to be resumed in the spring. It usually is. ;)

Hi all,

I'm joining this thread rather late, but it looks like nothing definite has been arranged. I'd be VERY interested in this course if that is still possible (dates being suitable of course), willing to send money as necessary, just let me know.

I'd been looking at (and almost booked) a Cat4 course run by Fantastic Fireworks (Luton) before finding this thread. Its a 2 day course in September, and includes the BPA Exam fee (after helping on 3 displays). However its £400, so obviously the course you're talking about would be much more affordable!! :)

Cheers, Bob
