Whilst walking round our plant today I ventured down to our packing plant (one of those lights out robot operated jobbies, well nearly lights out). I noticed one of the waste streams was cardboard spools. There are various sizes, but the one that first caught my eye has a 75mm ID and a wall thickness of 15mm making the OD 105mm.

I asked one of our mechanical engineers to calculate the bursting pressure (continuous loading so spike should be higher) and it came to 500PSI (14 tonnes force over a 75mm area).

So the question is does anyone want any of these as they just go to waste (100's per day). Postage could be a bit pricey due to the weight and I am not up for doing loads of postage, however I could bring a fair few of them to the BIG EARS or the Icarus meet in the summer, or of course you are more than welcome to come and pick some up from the Hull area.

No problem 10 booked.

I will post a photo of them later (510mm long missed of the first post).

I will however have an ultimate limit to the amount of these that I can transport due to their size/weight.
Phew that was close.

I'd like 10 please possibly at the Icarus meet.

Anyone have really good ideas about plugs for these tubes? Can anyone do plugs by lathe or hole drill?

Has anyone made plugs from sand filled polyester resin?

Do you have a "Staples" stationery store nearby? They do a store to store general delivery for a sensible price, You could send them to people without too much effort and certainly my local Staples is open til 8pm so you can do dispatch after work, and paople can collect after work.

Usual courier regs re flammables but for hard paper no prob.

No problem assume they are booked.

The problem is I am happy to give these away so I don't mind picking up a load now and then and dropping them off where people will be (and me), however if I start having to run around out of my way then I would have to at least cover my costs and I would rather not charge for them if at all possible.

Yep I would be interested in 75mm plugs if someone can turn them up on a wood lathe, or if anyone knows where to get 75mm dowel even better.

Plugs would be the next great find. Are the tubes really 75.0mm as plugs must fit well. Dowel is always slightly undersize

Cooperman certainly had a lathe in his workshop. Icarus has one too.

I certainly fancy the polyester resin with sharp sand filler as a plug, just cast it in situ and the resin bonds to the tube. Any wisdom?

Well on my tape measure they were 75mm, I am not sure on the .0 though.

I left the sample tube in my office so no photo yet (maybe tomorrow).

I like the idea of the cast plugs that would make things easier, I would still be tempted throw a few screws in before pouring in the resin though.

I have access to lathes at work, but they are metal work lathes. I could turn up some nylon 66 to make plugs (will have to check on the price).

Pyro Direct have cheap wooden plugs but the postage is a bit high from the States.

Yep all booked. I will have to start a spreadsheet.

I will take a few home today to see how much car space they take up to see how many I can bring with me.

Would they be OK for a Clarke's steel fountain? If you made a rocket with one of those you'd need some airspace to test and fire it.
