My 4" mortar is blue, but yeah they seem to be mostly black or yellow.

PGF-Looking at the pic on the right, it does seem like it is HDPE/MDPE with regards to the cut. One test you could do is to cut a small section and hit it with a hammer, (PPE a must) if it shatters it's PVC....I'm not sure what happens if you hit HDPE/MDPE BTW

If you hit HDPE/MDPE it will just distort.

As with almost any plastics, the pipe could theoretically be any colour. I've personally only seen red and black HDPE mortars though.

I agree, it can be any colour. In the blue is usually for MDPE water pipe (also available in black but becoming more rare as blue is becoming the standard it would seem), Yellow MDPE for gas service, Black HDPE high pressure service, again it is available in other colours (green, grey) but the predominant colour is black. Well for the UK anyway.

I am sure that is not exhaustive and that there are many other variations.
Phew that was close.

The black pipe could easily be ABS, which should never be used for a mortar. If you hammer the black pipe and it cracks or breaks it is definitely not HDPE.

The size of the pipe won't help in determining what it's made of. Try some of the test methods mentioned above. Also, I've found when cutting ABS, the burr left from cutting is grey and brittle, where HDPE will be soft and harder to remove. The pipe you have may also be PVC, another no go for a mortar.
