Still on about licensed storage!

What volume (meaning size!) is needed for what NEQ, even approximately, for cat 3 and cat 4 fireworks 1.3 and 1.4.

Would a 40 ft container physically store a tonne or much more or less?

you can easy get 1 tonne NEC of 1.4 in a 40 foot container probelry more depending on how you stack it and what kind of aisles you need etc need quite a bit of open space around it though to say the least

Depending on the product, you could get many, many tonnes in a 40'!

OK! From a phone call; a 40ft container packed for import from China with cat4 will contain about 10 tonnes of firework NEQ. So packed for storage and access a 40ft should hold 5 tonnes and a 20ft 2.5 tonnes NEQ. Sound reasonable?

sounds resonable to me though if your walking round them in the dark you want the storage as easy to manage as posible remember when they say packed for export they mean packed ...floor to roof frount to back

the other thing to consider is how much you actually want to store in each container 5 tonne NEC is 1 hell of a lot of explosive should the unmentionable happen (you have seen the videos done in america on shiping containers? ) it may be an idea to look into splitting the storage into 2 or 3 if you have the space to be able to do so

Yes, seen some of those vids!

I've fired several shows, cat 3 and 4. I've got some business coming in and want to judge the scale of store and stockholding that I a/need and b/can afford and c/ can licence. I have two sites with 100+metres clearance and a possible site with only 5 metres.

However at the moment 20 big cakes and some 3 inch shells looks quite reasonable for stock. and that is probably within 100kilos NEQ

My searching so far indicates that a modified 20ft (or 8 ft ) ISO container will cost £3K but a H&G explosive store will cost £12K fir much less internal volume.

Ok, lets just say you dont NEED to be storing anywhere near the capacity of the 20foot container to start with :)

I have a number of storage sites and a number of containers, none of which are full. :)

I'm currently thinking of an 8 ft container with 500kilos licence then another similar somewhere else.

if you have the safety distance then you may as well go for the largest licence you can get (2000kg before you need to involve HSE)
it doesn't mean you have to use it all :)

I would also stick with the 20ft containers, readily available, space for getting racking in, £45 a month to rent :)

Locally I don't have table 8 distances for that much! only table 9.

First I'll get a local small store licensed for 200 or 250Kilos 1.3. Then I'll look for a distant store for 2000 kilos where I have sufficient table 8 distance.

You only need 80metres to get the 2000kg, I thought you mentioned a 100m safety distance, I guess thats not local??

Not me! I want cat4 supplies so I'm trying to find what size of store container, and what size of neq, will make a sensible stockholding and take a sensible distance somewhere near home.

I've access to two sites with 300m radius of space round them, but they are too far away for daily use. I am considering what and where to store cat4 in small quantities near home in London E6 as well as storing more in the middle of a field in Leicestershire.

My reference to an import container was simply the first neq/container volume estimate I found.

Does any licensed store holder care to say how much neq cat4 they actually have in what size or style of container. I've been offered 8, 20, and 40ft ISO containers for the same price with doors for fireworks. But I think a 40ft would cost more to store and be OTT for 500Kilos neq of shells and cakes. Would the 8ft be better. Buying a small 1.1 store off H&G is too expensive and too little volume.

I would go for a 20 foot container, easier to obtain, get delivered, gives you room for expansion etc etc

As for what other people store, I wouldn't worry too much about that, just think about your own requirents. You want to store 500 NEQ now, but things change :)

Ok. I offered up the H&G info just as an example of what HT1 requires. HT3 in your position, personally I'd go for a 10'\20' container. If you get to the stage where you need more storage space, then add an additional 10'\20' at a later date. To be honest, that's a lot of stock sitting on the shelf screwing your cashflow for a new business. Whilst there is some merit in holding stocks of shells\mine\single shots (for various reasons), I believe it's better to buy cakes and candles on an as-and-when basis.

I'd rather have 20k sitting in the bank than sitting on the shelf.
