I should be receiving my wolter crossette pump any day now...

What are the best comps, or everyone's favorite comps for making crossettes?

What size crossette pump are you getting from wolter? Sorry that this isn't an answer for a formula but I purchased a 3/4" pump last year thinking it would be good size to start with. I was going to use a basic charcoal streamer comp and try to perfect the break but since then I have learned thay are difficult to break being small in size without using flash which detracts from the desired effect. The project was put on the back burner until I have 3 months worth of spare time to go into dark comp.

Ummm... a 3/4" crossette pump! I guess I was thinking the same as you for a good size to start...worst case I'll flash burst the comets, but as you had troubles, I may not start with charcoal streamers. The pump is not here yet and I want to stay excited about it...

I have tried a few formula on 1" crossettes, I'll dig out one that worked well and post it tonight.

Well here is a formula that is based upon the Shimizu Golden wave formula

Potassium Nitrate 37
Antimony Trisulphide 9
German dark pyro aluminium 5
Spherical aluminium sub 60 micron 10
Bright flake aluminium 40 - 160 micron 22
Flitter aluminium 1mm - 2mm 10
Dextrin 6 - 7
Boric acid 1

end primed in a bp slurry containing 7% silicon then dipped into a 4FA equivalent bp

Don't be fooled by the low oxidiser content, this formula burns fiercely and produces a shower of white sparks all the way to the ground before the break when fired from the ground.

Give it a try and tell me what you think.

I don't have any antimony trisulfide, so I may have to try another one. I think there is a golden wave that uses sulfer as a substitute so I may try that one.

on the webpage below they discuss crossette and all they use is a simple formual of "This example uses Skylighter 68/20/12 with +5 dextrin and +10 Ti." Then filled with flashpowder.

The process discussed of taping and gluing sounds simple.

Thanks for posting that link...I've had it and lost it quite a few times, but it is a good source for info. Another is Passfire. If you arent' a member, it is highly recommended. You do have to pay but it is worth it. OOOPS had it typed wrong there...

I'll second that. It's WELL worth the subscription fee (as too is the fee for the UKPS, for all you UK non-members)

I agree aswel with the link, good source for info. Those 'Mandarin shot' for instance, good way to split the crossette if you don't like the idea of using flash. (which is a good thing) There also referred to as 'rolled shots' I believe

Yep I am a member too. Very good archive and formula database etc. The only thing that would make it better is more regular magazine updates as I have read all the articles and would like to read some more.

More articles would be great, but I still have many items on there I'd like to try. The thing I hate about passfire is the forum, can't read a topic w/o being bounced all over the place.

I agree the forum is useless from a technical standpoint (great information though). The search function is also next to impossible to use to actually find the thing you are looking for.
