Picked up from various sources-

1. " my friend who owns a shop in doncaster had a visit from trading standards yesterday. A customer got hurt (slight bruising) by a firework and complained to trading standards that the instructions were not clear enough! When questioned the customer had bought a lucifers dragon. Being a fan cake it has a label on the top saying this side facing crowd! He had place the fan cake on its side with the top actually facing the audience! "

Humm, so here we have someone who has placed a cake to fire AT the audience... Fair enough, the label could be a bit "misleading."

2. Someone challenged the description " Spectators must be 25 metres away" and stood next to a firework, under the assumption that he wasn't actually a spectator as he was the person setting the fireworks off.

3. A person taking "Never go back to a firework that fails to go off" a little too literally, leaving a live firework in their garden which misfired (fuse went out) for months, as a kind of perpetual decoration.

4. People suffering hand burns after lighting 10, or more sparklers at the same time in one hand (the wire handle naturally gets very hot very quickly) .

5. People sensibly using steaks to secure fireworks. (OK, I made that one up.)

I disagree Starsky. I know a retailer who had this happen last year, Importers have to think of the most stupid person on Earth and write instructions that they can understand.

With the "I'll sue your @rse" culture. Instructions have to be written at retard minus level. A "This way up" probably would help. You forget, that you know what a fan cake is. Retard Rick of the street hasn't a clue.

ive also heard from at least 1 retailer the same story about somone doing this , sadly in this day and age nothing should be taken for granted

sorry, but if you have a person who thinks having the tubes pointing towards the spectators is a correct thing to do then I doubt any label would be sufficient.

The problem is, that you know these things work. Joe public hasn't a clue. Really! They are thick in some cases and they need explicit instructions.

Many people buy fireworks without a clue as to what they do. BS labelling doesn't help. Ejects stars for instance. Almost every firework includes that phrase.

On large cakes there could actually be a picture of one set up correctly, printed on the wrapping. A picture's worth a thousand words.

I tend to agree with Mortartube here. The guy who fired the firework might have thought it was a fountain effect or something. The point is that WE know this is dumb, because we know about fireworks. Other people don't.

I remember firing rockets with a University educated guy- a clever bloke, who thought that you were meant to stick the rocket stick in the ground and the head flies off.


That said, it should be noted that the vast majority of people who use consumer fireworks do so safely and properly.

I understand the sentiment, we "know" fireworks whereas Joe Public doesn't.

I just don't agree that someone needs to know about fireworks to grasp that having the tubes pointing towards your ten year old nephew is a bad idea.

It's all opinions and we are all entitled to them

But you don't necessarily know that they are tubes and that they eject something unless you know the term "cake" do you?

I would hope that for the majority that common sense and the BS labelling would prevail!

The label should also read, "Before lighting stick finger in tubes to ascertain correct orientation of cake before positioning so as not to endanger other members of innocent public if you are a complete idiot who lacks common sense"!
