The compound burns losing mercury vapour to the atmosphere as part of the formation of the snake. -no longer a good thing to do!!!
Added;
The other snake formulation contains a fair percentage of picric acid which used to be a regarded pyro ingredient but now comes under COER as it is a shell filling high explosive in it's own right! Not really suited to retail fireworks.

thanks, thats quite interesting i thought the mercury would make the product more expensive though?
