Ive spoken to a fellow Australian who has had good success with GSLD anodes, from what he told me if you have a big solution bath and have the rod spinning at a constant speed and follow what is in the patent you will get very good results. His homemade anodes lasted about 2 months of usage.

As soon as i get my nitric acid ill give it a shot and report back

About the cloth. It wont crumble, you are making a VERY thick anode. mine fell from about 1.5 meters several times and didnt flake off. I dont think the type of cloth matters, i just used a sock

Nice ;) If I fail with ceramic substrate LD, I'l go for it!

Why isnt there anyone who sell lead dioxide anodes?

Surely someone would have purchased a few anodes and resold them by now

GSLD : I had a quite large nitric bath and a spinning setup also' and it didnt turn out to be successfull.

CERAMIC : ceramic is good but ull have some troubles with the connection' keep us updated.

I'l keep you updated, just waiting for some chems now. I'm not doing it the usual way rubbing PbO2 into the material. Instead, I'm using the industrial method first soaking the ceramics in Lead Nitrate solution and then, Sodium Persulphate solution. The Persulphate should oxidise the nitrate forming Lead Dioxide.
When I have a layer good enough to provide a stable connection, I'l apply a good layer by electrolysis.

Okey, things have changed a little. I found hashasan's method with cloth reinforcing to be my best choice so i went for it.
Now, I'm plating in nitrate bath. It worked great at first (until my steel connection failed), but now, when i changed to PbO2 connection, it wont really plate. The current is 0,23A wich is good, but i cannot see Lead Dioxide being deposited on the chloth as before. I'm not worried though, if nothing happens until tomorrow, I will apply another layer of Lead Dioxide paste and start all over again. B)

Yeah, and I'm finished with my power supply. It can deliver at least 50A before things goes too hot.
I have some pics too.

The plating in action.

The powersupply. Very simple, only a transformer and three rectifiers.

It was a dirty job though. First I had to make Lead Nitrate by boiling Lead in HNO3. No NOx Was produced. Coppernitrate was a little different. I used room tempered HNO3 and copper sheet metal. It reacted instantly and a big cloud of NOx formed quickly. Toxic, but quite pretty. And the blue Copper Nitrate solution was nice too. The Lead Dioxide for pasting was made using Lead Tetraoxide and HNO3. I first tried Lead Nitrate and Sodium Persulfate, but it didn't react at all. The Tetraoxide worked great and was a very clean operation. I also gave some additional Lead Nitrate.

Hm, probably not the healthiest chems in the world.. Hate to destroy pyro chemicals wich i've only got in small amounts. Would do a lot better in dragon eggs!
But hey! I've still got some Bismuth Trioxide!

Im running a small sodium chlorate cell just to see whats involved, so far so good. Having a decent lab power supply with currant adjustment helps.

Would anyone be interested in a group buy of titanium substrate lead dioxide anodes from india? Im might email them and ask about some numbers and costs. Prices could be good if we get a few people interested.

I'm running a small Sodium Chlorate cell too, just to test my power supply. 12,6A in a 4dl cell with 100g Chloride and graphite anodes :)

If the prices are below 70-60$ for a useful piece (that's cheap!) i'm very interested!

Ive sent a email asking for the minimum purchase amount and approximate prices for 12x5cm TSLD anodes

Dammit, cell has failed

Graphite rod broke in two, added some KCl solution and not much happened (only had 35ah anyway), going to try again but with some thick EDM bars

GSLD graphite rod? I made a cell two days ago. It was not the biggest in the world, only 4dl, 100g NaCl and graphite anode/catode. I used it to test my power supply. Despite the high current density (16A at most), the graphite anodes did very well with minimal wear. Got about 150g NaClO3 in a day!
Here's a pic too:

GSLD graphite rod?

nope just standard

Getting nitric acid around here is next to impossible and all the places that i have found are a 1000km+ away

I might get lucky and find a place that will even deal with the public.

If you're contacting anode manufacturers might it not be worth following the swimming pool chlorination platinised anode route that Pkhow suggested (page 17 or thereabouts
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

Depends, but there is not much detail on the thickness of the platinum coating. Last thing i would want is to spend $100 on one only for the coating to be eroded after a few runs. Thats if you can find one that you know is platinum and not MMO.

A commercially made TSLD anode will last years and will take a lot of abuse
