I have had great difficulty getting the facts on Cat 3 1.3G / 1.4G. Are you sourcing this info from a pucka fireworks industry website ? Not that I dont believe what you are all saying of course !

Several Pyrotechnic individuals.

Firework company's, specifically the firework Emporium, Epic, Kimbolton, Men Shun and Brothers Pyrotechnics.

Studying firework codes and laws, of course my understanding is still very brief.

Real life, video and pictorial references of fireworks.

And chemical studies.

Oh and the fire service, trading standards and the police are very useful.

Although not every source is always right as firework law and regulation is a very confused state of affairs in this country, so watch out.

(Oh and good fireworks do not always require over 5% of flash powder i just personally have not found many... (I am a heavy barrage user, seeing as we are not allowed shells)

Problem in that, majority of 1.4G barrages are awful.

I disagree with that, it is far too broad a statement. There are some nice, pretty effects that go down well with audiences, and some decent non-flash barrages out there. Just ignore some of the 2007 rush jobs!

On another note, remember that from a consumer's point of view there is no practical difference between 1.3G and 1.4G if you have less than 5KG NEC in total. (I think!)

I would agree there is some pretty effects, Men Shuns bicycle finale for example is very pretty with its tail comets but the problem is the sound and the big bursts. I am sure I will be proved wrong as chemists and pyrotechnics are very inventive. We have many 1.3g CAT 3 fireworks which are better than quite a few CAT 4's so who knows eh? I can only go by what I've seen. I wont discard all of them but in general I have to wait. I personally doubt we will be seeing much spectacular, just over priced rubbish without good chemistry. Eh...

Well there is a difference and that's the flash powder, unless pyro-mesh. It makes the firework in my opinion.

Clearly never used Kimbolton or Absolute's EN standard cat 2 cakes. (Or realises that most true enthusiasts started out with garden fireworks - remove garden fireworks and the industry decays, QED).

Oh and if the government were really concerned for peoples saftey and didnt want "Joe" causing issues, they would ban or heavily regulate sparklers as they cause the most injuries, oh and garden fireworks, honestly they are the biggest nuisance in the industry!

Here is data from 2005- the number after the type of firework is the number of injuries recorded across the month that centres on Bonfire night.

Type of Firework

1. Rocket 216
2. Air Bomb / Roman Candle 111
3. Sparkler 104
4. Other fireworks 102
5. Home made or extracted powder 15
6. Not known 443

Of those 41 people required no further treatment, 66 of the sparkler injuries occured at family or private parties, and 60 of those were persons aged over 18. 25 were children under 5.


As for garden fireworks being the biggest nuisance in the industry, I can't see your logic there at all.
