agreed....having seen a fair amount of japanese fireworks, fired IN japan, IN person.....i can say they are ahead of the rest of us by quite some distance..

I saw 5 30 inch shells, break 5 times.........it was AWE inspiring !

I also saw a single shell display at hiroshima.....it was a single shell, "little boy"...... i was told it was a 22" shell....Report only. No stars, nothing fancy, just a HUGE bang.

It pushed all the air out of my lungs...and made my vision blurred !

Yeah,.... the japanese round shells are very impressive, but I agree with you guys,.........where`s the inventiveness/originality in the display as a whole?

Why no giant floating lancework or fire-drawing statues of marine subjects? why no mini coloured floating bonfires on pontoons? where were the large fan mines? why didn`t they use parachute flares? why didn`t they light up the water with flares? why no maltese wheels? why no Grindola`s?

Why no lasers? or spot lights?

I would have liked to see fireworks launched from blimps, or even remote control airplanes used in some way or even one thousand lanterns floating up would have been spectacular!

For a £5 million budget many of us could have retired on a part of that budget and still put on a display for longer,.........I honestly believe Myself, Pyrotechnist, Arthur Brown, Portfire, Mortartube and many other talented/creative and/or individually experienced/trained or non trained pyro artists (appologies if I have forgotten to mention other names) on this forum would and could have done far better!

Only my opinion!

From what I know about Dubai and it's firework laws. This must have been a nightmare in red tape to put on.

As far as I am aware from people who have worked there. If you say "I will use 1000 x 3" shells in a show, you can only order and store that amount and have to show on paperwork that they were included in the show and fired (God knows how you do this).

Basically you buy what you intend to use and no more. This is what I have been told.
Organisation is a wonderful trait in others

Today's press has featured items on a new hotel named the Atlantis in Dubai, where tonight they will be holding what is reported to be 'The World's Biggest EVER Firework Display' - it is said to be between 5-7 times larger than the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony display!

In Fairness to Grucci:

It was a very good display, they went for the multi site option which used much (if not all when looking from above) of the island. They wanted symetry which is alot easier the way they did it. I suspect also the guy who comissioned the display told them what he wanted and got it. If you look at other Grucci display of a lesser value they do use aquatics, lance, wheels, parachutes etc etc, i think on this occasion they probably did as they were told. Thier timing was also pretty damn good, mainly down to fire one system but still how many crew were on it??!

It was pretty, it was big, and most people who watched it would have had the wow factor. Even though i wasnt there and think they could of done a few different things i was wowed! And lets be honest... if i was to say i could do better.... its i think i could have done better... but i havent got a clue what they were up against over there ie organisers, regulations, etc etc....( I have since wathed the CNN video which shows you an aerial view and my god that was amazing, they had waves of colour sifting through the center of palm island etc. That took some doing. You tube vids do not do any justioce whatsoever to this diplay.) I could not have hoped to do any better. And what is more i probably would have needed to spend half the budget on a firing system as even with all my mates stuff we wouldnt have got close.

Very Well done Grucci.

The official site now finally has the video up:

http://www.atlantist...andopening.aspx

Display starts at approx 09m:25s, with a pause of approx 1m 20s at 13m:36s, recommencing at 14m:56s, ending at 20m:04s

The CNN video is actually of higher definition, although at least with the official video you get the whole display. The YouTube videos didn't have the 'palm tree' effect, or other elements. Truly Son et lumière!

I can imagine that and dought it was a "start at daft o-clock AM, rig, fire" Defo a few days work.

As fantastic as the show was, I agree with CPF though, many of us on here with that budget could have done a more inivotive display.

I returned on Monday part of a four man uk team who worked on this display with Grucci's, 7 days ago feet in the persian gulf running data cable last night in the pouring rain doing a display in cambridge! i am so depressed.
I can confirm it was a crew of 185, i met some great people on this job and the end result after two weeks hard work was just awesome.(None of it computer generated as i have read on another forum!) i was lucky enough to bag one of the best seats in the house on the Q tip right opposite the Atlantis running the back-up. This one will stay with me forever.

Well done Grucci's and all who worked on this display

I think this just about hits the nail on the head. It's all well and good saying that 1500 3" Titanium salutes fired from 3 helicopters would've looked better, but if that's not what the client wants, you don't do it!!

Well done all who worked on it.
