For me, the most needed items are magalium, potassium perchlorate, and parlon.
As to the royal mail, you can pick up a list of prohibited items in any post office- it includes just about anything with a hazard warning symbol on!

I appreciate all the feedback, any chance someone can take trip to the post office and see what is or is not allowed? That would be a big help

Tajmeister,
What shows on LP web site is small % of what they have... get a brochure from them it will show nearly the entire range but not the KCIO4... have to call and speak nicely to sales for that.

Burlhorse,
If I get a chance I will try get teh info, but if someone else has a bit of time if they could dig it out that would be great... little hectic on my side at the moment.

Mark

I know for a fact that no oxidisers or flamable metal powders can be sent by royal mail.
The best method is probably by courier

When I quoted those prices for Patassium & Ammonium Perchlorate, I was relating the quotes I had been given when enquiring by e-mail. The are capable of supplying any chemical you need, just ask nicely!

I have made the mistake of purchasing items which could have been bought from LabPack from ebay. Don't make the same mistake.

They are friendly people, and even though the site says "minimum online order ?50", there is in fact NO minimum order. Ask them for a catalogue too.

I know this is an old thread but i was spekaing to my chemistry teacher today and he said that you can change KCLO3 into a sulphate easily and then very easily change it back into KCLO4. Any ideas on how to do this??

I never heard anything like that, the only method I know of is thermal decomposition of potassiumchlorate.

Never tried it myself, but it involves heating the chlorate slightly above it's meltingpoint for several hours.

KCLO3------->KCLO4+NaCL

As you can see you are left with some chloride aswell, this can be removed via recristalisation.

Well, you wanna turn KCLO3 into KCLO4 which is oxidation. Cl goes from +5 to +7 which is a loss of two electrons. A suitable oxidiser such as sulphuric acid H2SO4 will do this obviously :) .
KCLO3 + H2O ====> KCLO4 + 2H+ +2e-

H2SO4 + KCLO3 ====> KCLO4 + H20 + SO2 a bit dangerous
since sulphuric acid is relatively cheap, you could do this on a large scale, of course this process is known to be explosive

But as for K2SO4 ====> 2KCLO4
Perhaps HCL will do it?
nah
but HCL works for NACLO3
HCL + NaCLO3 ===> NaCL + HCLO3
8HCLO3 ====> 6HCLO4 + H2
Where are the matches?

That's an understatement!

The reaction will liberate Chlorine Dioxide and mostly destroy the Chlorate.

Bisulfates and Persulfates are ment to be able to oxidise Chlorates, but I've never tried it.

I know Persulphate's will oxidise Chlorate's to Perchlorate but I have not tried it either.

Jerronimo, where has the NaCl come from in your equation. It should be KCl

4KClO3 --> 3KClO4 + KCl
