Glad i could help :) ..Did you notice at the end of the tail the sparks became kinda golden? Theres a formula called 'silver flitter' quite simple and gives bright long lasting white sparks, but it depends on the chemicals you have. It's difficult to ignite, the 'veline style' prime work well, but would suggest step priming.

How did the willow stars go ?

Err I can't really remember but there was also some charcoal sparks coming off the star aswell (probably because i don't have a ball mill) but that gave it a nice silver/orange effect aswell :D
Sorry do you mind me asking what the "veline style" prime is?

And do you mean the willow stars I made before these "reaper silver" stars? I tried them in a small starmine and they give of a nice bright orange effect.
I'm quite proud of my star-making abilities so far lol

Reseach the 'veline color system'.It mentions a 'super-prime' for the stars, but it contains potassium dichromate !! which is nasty stuff and a know carcinogen, and so a prime was developed called the 'veline style prime', which doesn't contain K2Cr2O7.It's safer and does the job, it does use a few chemicals though, and simply step-priming my work.

Ok, I'm after a colored star comp (red and yellow) but with a silver or charcoal tail. It has to be simple. Could I use a comp like buell red and add a small % of course metal, like Al or Ti ? I suppose that if I wanted a red w/charcoal tail, I would have to take into consideration the fuel properties in the colored comp,or would simply adding a % of course charcoal, say 60# work ?

I know sasman has used red w/silver tail. Do you have comp ?

Cheers
Dean

Yes. That's how chinese factories do it, they add coarse metals. I have seen many green star formulas with TI in them.

Thanks MDH. I suppose the same would apply for a charcoal tail, just add 40-60# ?

I've always had a thing for colored stars with tails  Especially a nice bright red with a dense silver tail

The important thing I've found with this is that it works best with stars that already have some fine metal fuel in them already - so I guess Buell Red should be fine. With organic fuelled stars some of the coarse metal particles seem to burn up in the flame.

Here's an interesting looking one:

Degn, Red Meteor #27

Potassium Perchlorate: 24
Strontium Nitrate: 12
Aluminum, flake, bright. -325 mesh, 36 micron: 8
Shellac: 2
Dextrin: 2
Charcoal Airfloat: 1

I've not tried it myself, but this suggests adding some bright flake Al to a perchlorate star should give some sort of tail.

Thought I'd drop by with this formula:

Calcium Sulfate, 4
Aluminum, -325 Granular, 5
Sulfur, 1

It is almost impossible to ignite with a match, but inside a fountain or with a hot burning BP it burns with a bright white flame. It might work well with flash based shells or burst charges that include an already hot burning fuel such as aluminum.

46% Barium nitrate, 46% -44 micron granular Al and 8% Gum Arabic makes incredibly bright silver streamers. A 3" starmine is a specticle, and floods a wide area with light. however they are very difficult to light, and fairly expensive.

And do you mean the willow stars I made before these "reaper silver" stars? I tried them in a small starmine and they give of a nice bright orange effect.

If I remember correctly Reeper Silver streamers are a meal + Aluminium formula? For these to burn with a bright silver tail the meal needs to burn very hot. If you do not have a ballmill Zinginex, getting one will make your compositions dramatically better.

Hello everybody !,

I would like to know what I can do with aluminium powder (400 mesh), sulfur, KNO3, sodium percarbonate, carbon ? (except black powder)

I would like to create purple, yellow and kamuro stars.

And silver with aluminium, is it possible ?
And what are the percentage to do that ?

Are these formulas good ?
silver powder :
41 % KNO3

45 % Al

6 % Dextrine

4 % S

4% C

Kamuro :
41% KNO3

49% C

6% S

4% Al
Another question, how many grams of black powder to launch a 4" aerial spherical shell ?

Thank you very much !

Bye
 :)

The kamuro is good but you may be more impressed with Tiger Tail stars.

5.0 Potassium Nitrate
2.0 Sulfur
1.5 Carbon (whatever this means)
1.0 Aluminum
0.5 sodium bicarbonate

This is loosely a glitter reaction.

Your silver star, additionally, without sufficient binder will break up. If you want silver stars without a slight tail I think you are out of luck.

Hi Citron Vert,
to answer your question on the amount of lift to use for a 4 inch shell, assuming that your lift is good quality,milled/cia blackpowder, you will need to be using roughly 40 grams .I would immagine that you have been perfecting your technique with smaller shells so ought to know how good your lift is,if not i would start with a smaller shell, say 2.5 inch which i would use roughly 15 grams of lift and go from there,
regards,
Vince.

citron vert- You could try 'Reaper Silver'. It's simple and creates a long silver tail with the end of the tail becoming golden.

Meal- 90-95% (the hotter the better)

Al- 10-5% (your 400# will work well)

Dextrin- +5%
