Same, to begin with. If you like to experiment, there might be a better ratio to be found.

can i substitute perc into this formula:

ammonium perchlorate 82
copper benzoate 18
dextrin 4

it's not my own formula, but i can't remember who's it is.

i know it won't be as good as using AP, but will it be ok, and has anyone tried it?
thanks.

It is from AFN II page 92 "New Blue"

I don't think KClO4 with work very good. NH4ClO4 is a better chlorine donor.

I don't think anyone has tried this, so you have to make a small test batch to se for your self.

In addition NH4ClO4 is used because it produces only gaseous products. KClO4 won?t act this way.

So the completely different "behaviour" will yield completely different results. Worse ones, I think

I would personally use Potassium Perchlorate not Nitrate as you would get better oxidisation hence a better colour, try experimenting a bit and see what ratios give you the best red. Please post your results so that I can use your formula :D .

Try strontium nitrate, magnesium, a chlorine donor, and a binder. Or you can dry press them under a few tonnes and omit the binder.

New Star:

- 70 Potassium Perchlorate
- 10 Red Gum
- 15 Strontium Carbonate
- 1 Charcoal
- 15 Magnesium Shreds

Makes a fantastic red star with white crackles that fly off.

I hope you are aware that red gum can contain some sulphur compounds (apparently) so be careful with KClO3 !!

Why do you have to wait for Passfire to come out with an article? You take your magnesium, add 4% linseed oil by weight, stir around, and spread into thin layers and allow to polymerise. I have heard some people complaining that they don't think the oil spreads through out the Mg evenly. If you find this to be a problem, thin with acetone.

I am looking to make some Winokur glitters for new years. Number 34 to be exact. I used one before, #16. I trust that the formula will produce a good result. The purpose of my question is to see if I should ball mill the components(sans the Al) together before hand, or if I could get away with simply mixing the chemicals? I am running out of time, and I would really love to be able to mix them and have the effect work.

Glitters don't work too well if mixed too much so it is best to simply screen it a couple of times.
