Now, what are people's thoughts?
Is "new spec" doing the job nicely, or is it just "not the same."
Personnally, I do miss the volume that the old stuff could produce. I was at a show at the weekend, with consumer stuff, which was in many ways very enjoyable- but without the noise it did feel like something was missing.
For sure, pretty and creative fireworks certainly have a role too.

To bring up this old chestnut ...
Now, what are people's thoughts?

I was fairly impressed with the New Reg Brothers stuff I had on New Years Eve last year, it wasn't as loud as the old school 1.3G stuff but it was acceptable, that said I wouldn't have a stash of it for Bonfire Night, it's not loud enough for me on the whole.
For anyone wondering what New Reg cakes are like around the £10-£15 mark, here are the 2 videos I got of my Brothers cakes I had last new year on my back garden, hopefully give people a good idea of what to expect.
Brothers Free Fall...

They sounded pretty loud on New Years Eve, I think mainly because there wasn't much other stuff going off around us. It would easily be outperformed by a load of 1.3G stuff.
On Bonfire Night last year when we fired Brothers Open Fire, you could hear the bangs echoing in the distance. I don't mind the new stuff but don't like it that much, I like it loud, give me 1.3G and flash anyday.

Remember, since the change in regs even new 1.3g isn't as loud as old 1.3g

I hate to tell you, but Free Fall is actually 1.3g its never been produced "new reg" so if you couldn't tell the difference then it just proves the point.
Remember, since the change in regs even new 1.3g isn't as loud as old 1.3g
Is that right? My mistake then, still didn't really feel as loud as other 1.3G stuff to me.

What it was meant to say is even new 1.3g isn't as loud as the old reg's 1.4g
I disagree Mark.
Take for example our 100 shot cake Screaming Spiders and 80 shot cake Thunderous Finale. A few years ago it was 1.4g. Now it is classed as 1.3g. Exactly the same spec, chemical composition etc.
In fact, it is much less than the 25% level, so in essence we could if we wanted make it much louder than when it was 1.4g. Just got to make sure we comply with the 120 decibel limit.

Take Panda's Earthshaker or Brightstars Proton Bomb (same product) a classic example of old reg 1.4g that cant even be matched by todays 1.3g let alone 1.4g

Im not saying that your 1.3g is any quieter. What i'm saying is there is old reg 1.4g thats louder than todays 1.3g

Yes, I agree.
On my main Bonfire display, I fired a pair of Men Shun "Screamings" which dated back , I'd guess, to 2004 or there abouts, and there were noticably louder than any of the 1.3G or 1.4G I was using.
I remember too firing an old spec Tiger's Revenge, just the sheer amount of noise that it would make was awesome.
However, the point made by Epic is valid too- I'm not sure, but when did the 120 DB limit come in? That is going to restrict how loud any consumer firework is.

A lot of the old Men Shun , Cosmic, Bright Star etc stuff would be mixed effects, with reports as part of that (ie 5 red peonies, 5 green peonies, 5 reports etc.)
Possibly this is due to 120 DB limit, but given that there are dedicated report cakes around (Thunderking in it's Mesh, the Beast etc) I don't know what they don't also use reports in some other 1.3G or meshed items.
Possibly its just a gradual phasing out of reports altogether?

Your right Mark, but your referring to salute cakes which now fall into the 1.1g category.

I remember firing a pair together at at resonable safety distance and my audience complained that they were painfully loud (as indeed they were). Interesting that they would now be 1.1G...

David, any item which contains a report is classed as 1.1g, hence, an effect needs to be added to overcome this.
