Well my verdict is:
Yung Feng shells are gorgeous. The music was not that great for the pyro but the pyro was stunning, infact i would rather there wasnt any music for that one!
I was dissapointed the wheels didnt work so well, but Jubilees finale display was lovely as usual, i do like lots of comet sequences.
The middle was quite forgetable although i did notice what i think were angelfires falling leaf cakes as one point which are beautiful and a couple of kimbolton new colour crossettes which i also like very much.
worst song choice of the night was "time to say goodbye" as an opening song??? And the fact that jubilee annihilated that song just over a year ago with a jaw dropping display and in thier presence??? Someone didnt have thier thinking cap on there, altho they display was ok to it.
Best song was She bangs pretty much just because i loveld the thumps are the jars of flash powder!!!
* only my opinion! *

Problem with any music like this is that if people don't happen to like the song, then it falls a bit flat. I've seen the theme from Titanic be used, cleary they were trying to create a "moving" section of the display, but it fell a bit flat because it's ... well ... not a good song.
Stuff like Ricky Martin, corny pop, old rock and roll etc tends to be the "safer" option, as it generally suits the mood.
One display I was at actually played some Emo music, not exactly sure what they were aiming for there.... perhaps trying to move people. TO THE BEER TENT!
Ah, I'm kidding.

I find that the same old songs tend to do the rounds, I've seen 4 displays now that used the song 'rule the world', and its wearing a bit thin, though I admit I never liked that sort of music to start with.
I quite like to hear something new and unusual, although it may be good to include some recent pop songs, dependant on the target audience. In general though slower classical music is good for introductions but always seems to clash a bit when played with salutes and large shells. Music with a faster beat is better for the rest of the display as it is easier to synchronise the fireworks to the music.
Of course this is just all my opinion...
Might be interesting to see what type of music people prefer at displays, I will start a poll on this soon, and it may even be worthwhile asking at the next UKPS information stand what types of music people prefer in displays.
Unfortunately didnt get to Catton Hall this year, although I took a look at the youtube videos and it looked fairly good.

Indeed! There is one near me that just uses the same soundtrack (at the same venue, presumably for the same crowd, more or less) every year. That bit from "Gladiator" being notable.
Says a lot about how "traditonal" some small towns can be.
There is no definative answer, of course. I think it's just a question of the organisers making some good judgements and appropriate choices.
