IMO LP are simply being incorporated into another group/company.

Yes their prices can be silly, in reality pyro needs lower purities than they would sell -pyro of old probably had most of it's problems due to purities in the sub 80% region, nowadays pyro chems are probably 95% or better while lab and analytical reagents can be better than 99.9% and the extra purification really costs.

Magnesiun/Aluminium alloy is used as a catalyst for grignard reactions but at silly high purity so lab suppliers may stock it but at a price for the purity (which we don't really need!).

You would be surprised how pure most standard non "lab pure to analyse grade" "Technical Grade" chemicals are these days.

Most are above 99% pure as standard, for some the lowest available purity is now 99.7% pure. The lowest purity chemical I have come across recently was 97.5% and that was for a straight mineral grade chemical (minor purification).

There are a few chems where purity is absolutely paramount. I have had several grades of Strontium Nitrate from standard tech 99% to ultra pure 99.99% and I have to say the ultra pure is a totally different animal regarding hygroscopic nature (far superior). I believe that this is also true of Sodium Nitrate to some extent (although I don't have first hand experience of this.

Some metal powders are impure as they have additives to prevent them from reacting with atmospheric oxygen, so meant to be there. The lowest grade of atomised ali is now 99.5% pure (you can have lower grades made to order, but why?)
Phew that was close.
