maybe as a temporary option you could register a new domain name to point to your server.

That would require creating a new vhost entry on the hosting box (so that it realised that "new-apcforum.com" should point to /home/mumbles/apcwebdata (for example)). Unless you have a pretty good relationship with your hosting provider, they are likely to slug you the cost of another account.

If it was a financial issue, I'm sure we could have kept it afloat, by donations- had we known.

This sucks the way things are now...

Mumbles has indicated the problem on here recently. It's not particularly simply money though when he has the site up again he wouldn't mind a subscription/donation from members.

Nope, not financial by any means. I wish I could just throw a few dollars at this and make it all better. Though it could get that way if the guy doesn't pay the domain soon and I have to buy it off of some guy who snaps up expiring domains. I am really starting to get impatient, and frustrated.

APC is already supported by donations. There is a small link somewhere on the site if it were up. Money is not an issue.

That's good.

I'll look into it when it's up again.

Of course I do. It's just that said guy who owns the domain and Sidewinder are not one and the same. The guy who owns it is Mr. Yuk for any of the really really old timers. He hasn't stopped by in about 3 years.

We have something else in the works. A temporary domain name has been purchased, which may become a permenant name change.

For future reference, I think access via the IP address has been disabled for some security reasons, which is partially why I was stalling on it in the first place.

There really shouldn't be any security issues with using a hosts entry. It is exactly the same as connecting to the site normally except that it skips the "connect to another machine to find out the IP address" step, because it already has the IP address stored. Back in the day it was how everything on the internet worked.

In fact, if the DNS was working, the website wouldn't be able to tell the difference between someone who was using DNS vs someone who is using hosts.

The issue came from the other admin. When you login with the virtual host thing and the IP address, it shows up in the logs as going through that folder string I mentioned. Said folder string involves the account login name, which we both felt uncomfortable giving out for good reason.

We took the site down yesterday or the day before to make the neccesary changes. A backup had to be created, so anything posted after that would have been lost anyway. So two exciting pieces of information. Firstly, APC will be back in a matter of hours. Secondly since the site has been down anyway we decided to upgrade the forum to a new version of software. For the time being, we reloated.

www.amateurpyro.com

The site is live, but the software is being updated so the forum isn't opened back up just yet. There may be a short downtime at some point in the future as a couple more minor things need to be taken care of.
