my brother is just setting up a off license, with a rear brick built storage room, only joined the the main structure by the wall with the door in it.

we have been talking about selling fireworks for bonfire night and new years etc.

basically doing a party package with the booze and snacks.

so people, advice please. how bad will it be the get the license and who has contacts that could get me reasonable quality fireworks and a decent wholesale cost?

Only your local trading standards officer can advise on the suitability of the premises and the cost and availability of the required storage and sales licences. If there is a licensed shop there already, then the shopkeeper will know the TSO already.

It cant be too difficult mate. Last year a guy dropped a shipping container outside his house and was selling fireworks from that, i went in cos i couldnt believe my eyes and there was 2 police officers and trading standards checking his licences and all was fine. So i dont think it will be to difficult mate. Especially from a registerd trading premesis aslong as you have suitable storage which i wouldnt have thought means a container in the middle of knowhere storing cat4 stuff, just a safe secure lock up.

Depends where you are in the country, if you intending on utilising your suppliers main storage then you'll need to be close enough to collect regularly to top up the small licenced storage weight limit you'll be given in the shop?

I don`t want to put a damper on things, but Im wondering if you will meet with some resistance from the Trading Standards people because of including the sale of booze as a party package from the same premises?

i Had wondered about that, would that be down to the discretion of the local licensing officer or a regulatory thing?

Not sure if this helps much, but I've worked in a newsagents who sold pyro. The storage was a back room, connected to the shop - no separation apart from a door. The storage was metal bins which we were allowed to fill with 50kg NEC (IIRC) weight of pyro goodies. There was no topping up and a few leftovers but this was in a pretty quiet location.

I think what CPF is saying, is that it's not a very good idea to sell people booze and fireworks. We all know its fireworks then booze, I doubt most of the general public dont do this. Lets not give the anti squad more ammo.

one option is to give safety advice, any have any link to downloadable safety leaflets on firework use, I'm sure do not let off pissed will be there. would be worth handing out a leaflet like this for Free, if anything it will make us look a little more professional and community spirited.

EXACTLY Portfire, FIREWORKS FIRST, BOOZE AFTER! and I would include cooking with a BBQ.

I know this may come across as being unpopular and stuffy, but most of us know that a large proportion of our feral youths go and tank up by purchasing cheap liquor in off licenses/mini supermarkets (less security & monitoring/policing) as opposed to the big chains supermarkets before hitting the bars in our town centres at the weekends.

The granting of a license to sell fireworks in the same premises selling alcohol, would in my opinion see a increase in incidents/injuries = as portfire infered, this will give fuel to anti pyro groups to call for a ban on retail fireworks, and will set-back societies like the UKPS on many fronts.

Having said that, if you think about it, Tesco`s, Morrisons, Lidl`s, Sainsbury`s and the like do exactly the same right now, so would it make a difference to the firework fraternity if we supported a campaign to stop the coroporates selling fireworks by lobbying?

Personally I want to see more independant dedicated firework shops with newagents selling fireworks that don`t sell booze (as they did in my day), but then again Im either biased or stuck in the past on some of my thinking!

pretty much every corner shop in my area that sells fireworks sells booze, the only difference is we wanted to do party packages. the way i look at it there going to buy both, they might as well buy both in one place.

plus I'm thinking fluorescent yellow leaflet stating the things you are, thats something that isn't currently sold with the items.

Good point, but it just seems crazy that a dedicated off-license can sell booze at the same time as fireworks, I think it would be better if they just sold fireworks during the bonfire season, and revert back to selling alcohol afterwards!

I really like the leaflet idea, this should be compulsory for any purchase.

Agreed, it covers your back also. If people want to get tanked-up then get hurt while setting of fireworks, thats there problem.
