Got a few questions about consumer rockets. In the past I've had some incredibly disappointing rockets (more of a 'poof' than a big bang and nothing more than a few stars) and was wondering how to tell a good rocket from a bad one. Basically, what I want to know is as follows:

- Can you get decent 1.4G rockets at all?
- Will a small specialist shop be selling purely 1.4G rockets? I ask because my local specialist shop (Millenium fireworks on the A3, not far from Tolworth) is rather small but they often have some impressive looking rockets in there, and was wondering whether there is any chance they will be any good.
- How are the larger Kimbolton rockets? Last year I had the Medusa pack (which the lady in the shop told me was excellent, and perhaps used to be) and the Cyclops pack, but unfortunately both were really rather weak.
- Is there any way to tell 1.3G from 1.4G from the packaging? I've seen 1.3G cakes/rockets and as far as I can tell there is no indication of their classification contained on the packaging/the fireworks themselves.

I would like some decent medium-sized rockets in my display this year, but really do not want to bother with the naff ones, as they are simply not worth their weight in sawdust! I had some excellent Lidl rockets 2 years ago (Blue Apollo I believe they were called) but I suspect they were old reg? Huge deep booms they produced, with big, bright breaks. Every other rocket I've had (supermarket ones plus the aforementioned Kimbolton packs) have been very disappointing.

You wont find many decent ones that are 1.4G.

Most small specialist shops that sell rockets will be all 1.4G, unless they advertise that they sell 1.3G or pyro-meshed rockets. Big 1.3G rockets can come pyro mesh such as these, obviously 1.3G but came in the mesh which made them classed as 1.4G. My King Cobra's from last year... click here.

Not sure about the Kimbolton stuff sorry.

Lastly not many clues no, look at these... click here. Would they look out of place at a seasonal shop? Not really but they are 1.3G powerful little rockets with a decent boom and effects, sold by Epic.

So it can be decieving, best thing to do, go to a shop that is an advertised 1.3G retailer or one that sells rockets in Pyro-Mesh if your after big rockets, e-mail a few shops and see what they say.

A pack worth picking up (if you can get them) at a decent price are Black Gemini. Not too expensive and very good rockets.

If you want decent rockets which really do 'bang' - you're going to have to pay for them. My shout for best seller this year
will be the 'King-Dom' pack. £60 for 6 top quality rockets and a number of places are selling these.

Of The Rockets i have seen, any of the Epic packs are very good,also Black Gemini, good value, Soveriegn King Whoppers,have excellent colours,Absolute King Cobra,and Panther are excellent large rockets if the site is suitable. Epic Have some Excellent new large rockets,which i am looking forward to Firing,and the Brothers King-Dom looked really good as well. There is so much to choose from,it is very hard to decide.

Thanks for the responses guys. Those Black Gemini rockets sound good - does anyone know a shop that sells them in the Greater London/Home Counties region?

You wont find many decent ones that are 1.4G.

You do have to look carefully, but if you look towards the Absolute Fireworks range - best 1.4G rockets available in my humble opinion

Thanks for the heads up. There's a seasonal shop near me that has stocked quite a lot of Absolute stuff in the past, I'll have a look and see if they're doing them this year. The videos on the Absolute website are very impressive, but have they been touched up in any way? And are they showing new spec stuff?

Another one to keep your eye out for is Golden Lion's Venomous Vipers, they come in a pack of 5 and boy are they loud!

Sovereign King Whoppas are great, basically a 3" shell on a stick. Perfect colours and spherical bursts however it lacks 'oomph' as the shell is pretty weak and lacks any substantial pasting.

most consumer rockets(or any other firework) are going to be rather lacking on the boom front (thanks government pussy's)

just buy some mid price range rockets, oink the cone off drop in a few grams of perc flash replace cone and tape with packing tape. fire same day!!!!
