Thought I would start a thread about the excellent 'freeware' that is out there.

Now some is spyware or just crippled commercial programs to try and make you buy the product, but there are some genuine gems out there. Searching for ‘Open Source’ rather than freeware is a good place to start. Here are some of my favourites, why not add yours?

Audacity.

If you ever have to edit sound or change formats, this is an excellent program.

Audacity

Subsonic.

This is amazing. Put your music files into a folder on your PC, install subsonic & it indexes them and makes them available to any PC on your network. If you have an always on internet connection you can access them from anywhere, it’s simple, feature rich and looks very professional. It even configures the ports on your router for incoming connections

You can have a look at mine if you like. Username, UKPS, Password UKPS (lower case)
http://dunford.subsonic.org

If my bandwidth gets clobbered too much I may have to remove this. No laughing at my esoteric music collection!

Subsonic

Apache

The biggest and best webserver. Run loads of sites using this.

Apache

Filezilla

People know this as an FTP client, but there is also an excellent server. Very easy to install & maintain. I use it to grab large files from my home server.

Filezilla

Linux

Having recently given away 200 odd PCs to staff, we could not give the licensed Microsoft software away. We installed Ubuntu with Open Office & I must say I was very impressed. If I did not have access to Microsoft software at (ahem) very low costs, I would have no hesitation about going down this route. Forget crunchy old command line interfaces, this is now a proper operating system.

Ubuntu

Just a start – what can you find?

Nice thread... I dual-boot to Ubuntu. Lovely OS it is, if a little bewildering at first. If I didn't have to use the Adobe suite I'd probably do away with windows altogether...

Everyone should have VLC media player and Winamp MP3 player if they don't already.

Since you've mentioned it in passing Phil, I'll give a plug for Open Office - kind of a suite of programs like Microsoft Office but IMHO a lot less cumbersome and has a huge range of file import/export formats.

Have been using linux for years best thing since sliced bread.
I run at least a triple boot system, Mint being my main debian based system and Slackware when I feel adventurous,
and everybody should try puppy as a live system. I still have XP but just for gaming and Sony vegas.

Can anyone recommend a decent freeware (or shareware) for video editing? I have a couple of paid-for programs, plus Windows Movie Maker, but they're very choosy about what formats they will open so I have to run another program (Mediacoder) first to convert the XVID files from my camera to some mpeg format. Windows or Linux, I have both.

I can't recommend this personally because I've only just found it, and haven't has a chance to use it in anger, but....

Appears to be a comprehensive freeware video solution.

Something I've found extremely useful when windows refuses to start and you either need to fix something or backup files:

Slax

Its a tiny linux OS that can run straight from USB or CD, can also be loaded into memory then you're free to remove the disk, and do whatever you like. I don't think I would run it full time but it is quite reasonable for repairs or just to test hardware is working before you install a normal OS.
You can never have a long enough fuse...

Primo PDF is pretty nice:
http://www.primopdf.com/index.aspx
It installs like a printer so you can create .pdfs from any application that can print.

^^ That reminds me, WinRAR
http://www.rarlab.com/
This is a very good zip utility, as it can be accessed from the right click menu for files or folders. Technically it says 30 day trial, but the copy I have expired years ago and hasn't stopped working.

DVDVideoSoft.com is great as a back up for YouTube vids.

I recently closed my google account - which also closed my YouTube channel - so I used this software to get all my vids back and put them on my new channel :D
